While I hope to see NAU lose one of their last two and Idaho State win out, there is a pretty good reason to think Eastern "deserves" the auto-bid.

Of the six contender teams coming into the last two weeks, only 3 of us play 4 of the 5 possible teams.

Montana State: only misses NAU (1-2 so far against the contender group)
Eastern: only misses Cal Poly (3-1)
Idaho State: misses NAU and Montana (1-1)
Montana: misses NAU and Idaho State (0-2)
NAU: misses Montana State, Idaho State and Montana (2-0)
Cal Poly: only misses Eastern (2-2)

It sure seems like year after year, NAU has a fairly glossy record while playing the fewest contender teams. FWIW, how the hell did we lose to them again? Damn, we could play them 10 times and only lose once... even with a backup QB.

Obviously, this matter for nothing if we lose to Portland State.

I agree. I think it was just bound to happen. 14 game win streaks are tough to keep rolling in ANY conference, no matter how weak the opponents are. Everyone was giving EWU their best shot every week. Regardless, with VA, that game wasn't even close.

In addition, I hate the 13 team conference because everyone is forced into this situation. The only way I think it would be okay, is if there was a Big Sky Championship game to settle the true champion on the field and we all know, that's not going to happen. Let's be honest, There are 4 teams in this conference that aren't good enough to compete for Big Sky titles. That's not a slam on them, that's just fact.

Conference champion or co-champion without playing ISU, MSU or UM, that's just wrong. I hope UND somehow pulls off the upset.

I have a funny feeling SUU might trip them up.

What's even more wrong, is that because of our regional location, we will play two of the top 4-5 Big Sky schools every year while other schools, I.e. NAU, gets off easy.

Don't get me wrong, I want to play UM and MSU every year, but it's not right that others get off not playing more than one of the top 5 schools in the conference this season and get to claim Big Sky Champions.

All of this brings us to only one logical conclusion, the BSC is too big.

Probably. Northern Colorado and Southern Utah were weird acquisitions. North Dakota makes sense as an institution, but is tough due to geography. I'd love to see Eastern add a hockey program and use UND for guidance, but if we can't afford half of a stadium, adding a hockey program ain't happening. Adding the California schools made sense, IMO.

Part of the issue is that there is no alternative FCS conference out west. It would be great if the Big West had football programs (aside from Davis and Poly). I hate seeing the Big Sky play itself as a pseudo-OOC game, and the NCAA continues to discourage it without banning those games as counters for postseason consideration (although I suspect it will happen eventually).

The conference will shift in 2 years or less when Portland State DROPS Football  :ohno:.
I think that is pretty much signed sealed and going to be delivered . . .that team is walking zombies pretty soon!
So the better question is will the conference add or just allow the subtraction and reconfigure schedules?

LDopaPDX you make a good point about no western FCS alternative to the BSC. From a geographic perspective it makes sense to have UNC, SUU, NAU, Sac St, UCD and CPU form another FCS conference.

After PSU goes away we should invite UI to rejoin the BSC when they finally come to their senses and realize that they will never be a real FBS team.

If PSU drops, I hope MSU becomes the other "rival", we've done a great job playing them every year.

If PSU does drop football, I can almost guarantee that EWU will become rivals with PSU's other rival, which is Idaho State.
