Conference Time

Time for conference play to start up next week, which is really all that matters in the big sky as I don't know if a Big Sky team has ever received an At Large bid, at least in recent memory.

I think things look promising for the conference season. We have a really tough start with the Montana schools on the road then Weber at home, but I think this team will do really well. Weber is definitely the team to beat, but they have not had a stellar start to the year as they lost or almost lost a couple games I thought they would win.

The Griz haven't played as well as people thought they would, but they are talented. Tough to figure out MSU, I think they are talented but just haven't put everything together.

I think the Eags will finish top 4 in conference as they have played a tough schedule to start including 5 of the last 6 on the road, they will put together a nice run and hopefully a push towards an NCAA bid. If we can split with the Montana schools to open the year and beat Weber at home, I think the Eags have a shot at winning the conference this year.

Looking forward to a great conference season.

The Eags will finish no worse than third in conference this year. And if we get a few breaks here and there, it wouldn't surprise me to see them challenging for the top spot. We'll need better defensive play for that to happen, however. The other issue is depth.

I agree that third place is the minimum place we should finish. Isn't that where the coaches picked us? With the talent on this team we have a good shot at second but only if Coach can get them to play defense and as a team. If not, we will see lots of close games with nothing to show for them like several of our pre-conference games. I respectfully disagree with Clawman regarding lacking depth. This is the most depth we've had in years. The majority of our players are jrs and srs and we have a solid seven with good role players that can get rest for the main seven. We have more collective experience and minutes played returning than most teams in the Big Sky. The players we lost left because they were not playing. It has zero effect on our depth. Our team is loaded with talent and old returning talent at that. If coach gets them playing we will be fine and actually host a conference play off game! It is going to be a great conference season and it will start with two road wins. MSU is down this year and we beat UM the last time we played them with our whole team back this year. 2-0 is going to be pretty sweet.

I see 3rd or 4th for EWU based on the way things ended in the non-conference. They have the talent to finish top 2, but I don't think they showed they are a for sure top 3 team.

A big key against them is that they don't get easy points at the FT line, and they give up a ton of them. I could be wrong, but I don't any team has had their opponents shoot my FTs than the Eagles have had. They have to clean that up. Another thing is that since they rely so much on the outside shot, they don't get to the line, and they only shoot 40.4% from 2-point shots. With that reliance, if they are not hitting from the outside, they are susceptible to lose some games they shouldn't.

Good analysis Jon. I hadn't thought about that. You know your basketball. I've seen us play all four home games and on line and you hit upon my biggest concern, though not as well put as yours, and that is a lack of discipline. Do we have the discipline to take better shots? To get the ball inside to help our perimeter game and get to the line? To not foul so much? To play better defense? With mostly jrs and srs we should have done these things more consistently in pre-con and we didn't. As a result, I agree with Jon that we will lose games we should not hence third or fourth is where we will likely land with the second most talent in the league, sadly. Time will tell what Coach can get out of this team and great talent.
