SR F Delaney Conway is Portland State's first-ever first team Academic All-American.
PORTLAND -- Portland State senior forward Delaney Conway was named a 2007-08 first team Academic All-America by ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Tuesday. Conway becomes the first Viking player to earn first team Academic All-America honors in program history, at either the NCAA Division I or Division II levels.
Joining Conway on the first team were Tennessee junior and United States National Team member Candace Parker, Colorado senior Jackie McFarland, Indiana State senior Laura Rudolphi and Drake senior Lindsay Whorton.
Conway holds a 3.99 GPA while majoring in Science.
“It is an honor to coach such a special student-athlete like Delaney,” said Portland State head coach Sherri Murrell. “She truly is a product of hard work and commitment. I’m thrilled for her to be named to this prestigious award. She has accomplished much in her career here at Portland State and we are proud of her.”
To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must be a starter or a key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her institution. Once nominated, a player must then be selected to the first team in their respective district.
Both Conway and junior forward Kelsey Kahle were named first team Academic All-District VIII this season. For Conway, it was her third straight Academic All-District selection. She earned second team honors in 2005-06 and third team accolades last year.
The Academic All-America honor caps a stellar week for the 6-feet-0 senior from Seattle. Conway scored a career-high 31 points in the Vikings’ 82-60 win over Northern Colorado, last Thursday. Conway went 11-of-12 from the field against the Bears, making her first 10 shots, and her 91.7 field goal percentage is tied for the third-highest on the school’s single-game list.
For her efforts against Northern Colorado, Conway was selected as the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on Monday. It was the third time this season Conway has won the award.
Conway has started all 26 games this season, averaging 12.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. She is shooting 49.0 percent from the field to rank second in the Big Sky. Conway is also fourth in three-point field goal percentage, 43.1 percent, and sixth in three-point field goals made, 1.81 per game.
Overall, Conway is the second Academic All-America selection in program history. Kim Manifesto earned third team Academic All-America honors in 1994-95, while Portland State was a member of Division II. Manifesto also earned honorable mention Academic All-America honors in 1995-96, while Kristi Smith was a two-time Academic All-America honorable mention selection in 1994-95 and 1995-96.
Portland State is currently 19-7 overall, 9-4 in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings are tied with Idaho State for second place in the Big Sky, two games behind first-place Montana with three games left in the regular season. Portland State’s 19 wins is the most by the program since joining the Big Sky and tied for the most as a member of NCAA Division I. The 1990-91 Portland State team went 19-8 while playing as an NCAA Division I Independent.
The Vikings will return to action Saturday afternoon at Eastern Washington. Tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m., at Reese Court in Cheney, Wash.
