What a condescending and factually-inaccurate column. He makes a lot of assumptions about Weber State (saying we don't get recruits who get offers from bigger programs) and that BYU should've whooped WSU by more than 15 points. Bleck!

Condescending- yes!

We have to consider the source:
Nathan Gagon is a finance manager by day and a writer/musician by night, but mostly he is a wholehearted father, grateful husband and ardent student of life — around the clock.

Read the Sunday SLC trib game recap article, makes it sound like Mika's block turned the whole game around. I now they are high on the kid, and he will be a good player - but he got schooled on Friday. Weber will never get any accolades when BYU is the opponent.

I really wonder about the quality of journalism being employed by Utah's media outlets. This is evidence of how poor the Des News really is too. Yes, we all know that the Des News is the biggest HOMER paper for BYU, but to publish such blatant garbage and half-truths and take an opinion and publish it as fact is a sign of poor journalism. Reality is, is that Weber should have done better and that the game should have been a lot closer. Also, and finally, recruiting is just one piece of the puzzle. If your recruits don't buy into the program and work hard it doesn't matter how good they are, they won't go anywhere or achieve anything. A team with far less talent, if coached well and has excellent chemistry, can always pull off upsets. That is why basketball is such a great sport to watch. Under-dogs can routinely win games against supposedly far superior teams.

Evidently, this guy didn't take the time to do any research, and he knows absolutely nothing about Weber State's program. It isn't very hard to find information on recruiting. Verbal Commits, Rivals, Scout.com, even ESPN has a list of our recruits and how they are rated and who recruited them. Doesn't take too much effort to find this information. Joel Bolomboy had offers from New Mexico and Clemson. Last time I checked both are "major" programs. Senglin had offers from Houston, Texas A&M, and LSU I guess the WCC is better than the SEC or C-USA. Well, according to the myopic and near-sighted world of BYU media.

He needs to add..."absolute idiot 24hrs a day, 7 days a week." Not that I had much respect for the Des News before, I don't have any now.

The good news is that no one reads the paper anyway. Anyone curious about the game will watch it on Youtube.

I am not sure if he watched the game. He studied the box score and watched the highlight reel and wrote a story.

Hawks,

This is the desnews...didn't u know byu = ucla, kansas, kentucky??

Of course byu is superior to weber and any other college.

:ohno:

I didn't think the BYUtv recap was too bad. Gotta admit, they do a fairly good job and are pretty professional for being run mostly by Y students. One of the commentators said that Mika got skooled by Big Tres. By the way, the and one that Haws got early in the game was BS. There was a perfect shot of it and Joel didn't even touch him. Oh well, we got a lot of and ones so I guess it evened out in the long run.

Talking about Jimmer, what has he done lately? Lillard continues to amaze and break NBA records and Jimmer does a great job sitting the bench. http://fansided.com/2013/11/09/portland-trail-blazers-damian-lillard-breaks-nba-record/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yes it would. My understanding was it's HD on Comcast but not satellite, or at least not DirectTV.

WSUAlumnus - for sure Weber State has some talented players and recruiting services are wrong about players a bunch (Jimmer Fredette, Cody Hoffman, Alex Smith, Eric Weddle, Chuckie Keeton, Damion Lillard, just to name a few local examples). But I would be interested to know which current Weber State players had offers from which major programs...

Anyone gonna educate this guy (DresdenBalla) on the article comments?

just like byu, weber only recruits against kansas, ucla, kentucky and utah valley university. when byu was on the radar for jabari parker, the next lebron, that is also the case for any top 10 national recruit.

LOOOOOOOOOL yeah, Jabari Parker wasn't really an option for BYU. I know the Zoobs will claim that the cougs were his second choice but that just isn't true. Anyway, Rose did have one hell of an awesome class in 2013. He signed two four starts (Lone Peakers: Mika and Emery), two three star recruits (Worthington and Shaw), and a two star (Hartstock). Not bad...but, and I'll be honest about this, most stars are given to recruits by local scouts (who have a bias at times). Yes, Mika, Emery, and TJ Haws (2014 recruit) are all good but I'm sure some local homer like the doosh who wrote the above article, gave them more credit than what they are due. All are solid recruits thought.

Reading that article the other day got to me as well. The line I threw a fit at was:

"The bottom line is that if Tresnak had not played in this game, Weber State very well might have been down 25 at halftime."

I guess a Weber homer would have written about the Y's guard play:

"The bottom line is without Haw's consistent scoring ability and team high 28 points, Weber would have won the game."

I couldn't believe he would say something that totally stupid. If a guy plays, he plays. You can't theorize about taking any of his stats away from the game that was played.

The problem is that even if it is only internet fodder to fill space, the DesNews should still maintain some form of journalistic integrity. Gagon -- and "gag on" it I did -- is obviously a Y tool and just shouldn't get space promoting his breakdowns in any newspaper. We can complain and are used to Utah media treating our teams poorly, but the Des has responsibility to provide their readers better than this...
