Damaging Loss by the Women

The Bengals blew a 16-point lead at Eastern Washington today, losing 66-64. The loss was damaging to ISU’s chances to get a first round bye. They are now in a three-way tie for third and fourth, the final bye berth, with Weber and EWU, both of whom own tiebreakers over ISU. The Bengals need to beat both Montanas next week and get some help in order to sneak into that fourth spot.

PS—Weber put 105 on the Vandals today.

Tough loss. ISU was playing well and then went into one of those offensive funks that has hit this team a few times this year. The team still has a chance to win 20 games but I am disappointed if they don't get a bye this year. Too good of a team to not finish in the top 4.

EWU plays SUU and NAU on the road.
Weber, of course plays MSU and UM at home.

Our best hope is for a Montana school to knock off Weber (who had been struggling).
We own the tiebreaker over Portland State who is also 10-6.
Of course, ISU needs to win both games at home.

I missed Portland State in there. BTW in the event of a four-way tie, they break it first by looking at the head-to-head cumulative records of the four teams. ISU was a combined 2-3 against Weber, PSU and EWU. I’ll have to see where that would put them compared to the other three schools.

Update: Weber is also 2-3, while PSU is 3-3. EWU is 3-1. So assuming all four schools win out next week and the four-way tie holds, Eastern would finish third and PSU fourth.

Thanks for the very helpful update, Skippy.

BTW, Portland State plays Northern Colorado and North Dakota on the road this week.

Best hope is for PSU to lose the game to NC and for a Montana school to knock off Weber State and of course, for ISU to sweep at home.

Update: Another interesting possibility is for Idaho to lose a road game next week. That would be the Vandals' 6th loss. Though, they play NAU and SUU, so a loss is unlikely but not impossible.

It was a bad loss, no way around that. One of the last things I would have expected but Eastern seems to have the hex on ISU right now. Remember when they last played at Reed last year ISU had a slim lead going into the 4th quarter and couldn't close it out either.

These kids have shown when these things happen (and when you play 30 games a year they will) they respond well from it. Let's hope that's the case this week.

Even if they don't grab a bye (and the odds aren't in their favor) right now they still have the 2nd best overall record in the Big Sky, haven't played a lot of home games and still have a very reasonable shot to be playing somewhere after the BSC Tourney the week of March 13th.
