Declining enrollment

The Journal reported today that ISU is anticipating a significant dip in foreign student enrollment this fall and an estimated loss of about $5.2 million in associated student fees. As noted earlier this will impact athletic department budgets.

The university is implementing new student recruitment tools and is hoping to see a positive impact in the coming years. In addition to declining foreign student enrollment, ISU has been significantly impacted by the rise of BYU-Idaho, where church members can send their kids for significantly lower cost than state schools like ISU. Last I looked BYU-Idaho had about 16,000 full time equivalent students. That's a lot of potential ISU students going to Rexburg.
 
Way back when, something like 40 years ago, I left Idaho Falls for Boise State. I wasn't in the "club" so Ricks, BYU or Utah State weren't for me. Idaho, not going there. But Idaho State didn't even show up for the senior college days at my high school. Nope. I'm not sure if ISU was represented at Skyline or Bonneville high school senior days back then.

After all these years, I hope ISU at least shows interest in Idaho Falls students.
 
I know they have a campus near Russell Freeman park. That was our class reunion venue. It's awesome that there is an ISU night at the Chukkars game. Way back when, I remember going to the Idaho Falls Yankees and Idaho Falls Angels games on AEC (Atomic Energy Commission), Idaho Nuclear and other special nights. Those were fun times... back about 5 lifetimes ago.

I'm glad ISU goes after students in Idaho Falls.

Idaho Falls is in the process of turning EITC into a junior college, which will also undercut ISU's tuition costs. It will be interesting to see if that ultimately helps ISU enrollment as a feeder program or takes away too many undergrads. Challenging times to be in higher Ed in Eastern Idaho.
 
Good to see with the declining enrollment predictions accompanied by the issue of less funding and income, that ISU is still paying that Ass Clown Fletcher his $214K annual salary while he's on approved leave. Way to go, Vallas!
Maybe we ought to check and see if donations to Bengal Athletics are refundable. Obviously, they don't need the money in Pocatello. Cronyism at its best. :thumbdown:

A good question would be when does his contract expire and will he be around after it does?

On the topic of Idaho Falls and enrollment challenges, I was perusing the SBOE's advanced materials for their meeting here this week and came upon a proposal from ISU to develop a Polytechnic Institute in Idaho Falls. The thinking is that as EITC shifts to a community college, ISU's role in IF will shift from providing lower division courses to providing upper division courses needed to complete degrees, and graduate level programs. ISU is proposing to hire 13 faculty in IF with expertise in science and engineering-related fields who will partner with INL and CAES in research areas, and help the lab fill its growing need for qualified science and engineering graduates. I like this approach -- it's a proactive response to the development of an IF junior college, and it serves a niche market in INL and CAES.

From the responses he gave in his recent interview at the Democrat Convention it sounds like he isn't all that enamored with Idaho and its residents and their attitudes. But, hey, that ca$h is sure okay. He can't leave soon enough.
