Defensive strategy for UM

I think its pretty obvious that getting pressure and some hits on their QB is going to be important. He doesn't throw well in a dirty pocket, especially after getting hit. They run a lot of pre-snap motion and then misdirection in an attempt to freeze the defense because their OL is really not very good. I sure hope we stunt the hell out of them at the risk of giving up a few big plays. Just my two cents worth.

He was not a good scrambler, but in the past he shows flashes of greatness when he is allowed to have time to pick apart a defense.

Obviously this is a huge game for the Griz and they will be well prepared. I also hope we continue to pin our ears back and bring pressure like we have for most of the season and avoid the bend don't break strategy of the last 5 years.

I'm happy to give up TD's, but we have to get more stops than they do!

NAU excelled at keep pressure on Montana's QB, Gus. This made Gus pretty nervous and he threw a lot of bad throws. The problem for us is that NAU has a much better defensive line than we do.

There is no question that we need to get pressure on the quarterback every single play. Montana is going to be throwing the ball early and often and we need to get into Gus's head, just like NAU managed to do. So, linebacker and edge blitzes are going to be happening every play. Ebukam needs to step down often and our defensive line is going to have to pin their ears back. This is going to open holes in our secondary and give Montana some big plays. Even though they haven't had much luck with rushing, this will open the door to some big rushing plays. They will take advantage of this early and our board will freak out about our defense's "slow start".

But as the game goes on and we continue to rattle Gus, our physical defensive play will wear down Montana (just like our other opponents) we will dominate the second half.

I would say we need to pressure early, bring blitzes and hope our D'Line can get a push. Montana's offensive line is a weakness so we should get pressure. We also need to put points on the board early and often. Make them play from behind and have to throw the ball downfield so we can pin our ears back and rush the QB. Would be nice to see us get up by double digits early and start to bury them...

This. When he has had time he looks like a world beater. When defenses have been able to get pressure and disrupt he's had a hard time escaping pressure.
