Sioux, I've always thought you are a bit off. But, after talking to some people in the "know" splits might be coming. I'm just hoping Weber finds its way into the "right" split and that we don't fall on our sword over "traditional" rivalries etc. Playing against Montana is far more important than SUU. Well, at least to me.
What will push the splits? CWU is the next DII to move up, but it will probably stop there with DII's. Probably, what's going to happen is Grand Canyon adds football along with a couple of California and Texas schools. Spit balling here, but like St. Mary's, Pacific, Riverside, Irvine, Long Beach (not saying any will, just giving examples). There are a number of schools that recognize that it is a now or never move. Budgets and the economy is going to allow programs to make these moves, but the easy money won't last long. No matter, like I said in the other thread, football is expensive. Without FBS games on our schedule, the Cats wouldn't be able to afford the program. We have to play at least one a year.
Don't get me started with the management of athletics and the lack of initiative and innovation. It really is time for Jerry to get called to the carpet and challenged. There needs to be expectations and revenue growth. The athletic budget has been stagnant for far too long. However, because of Jerry we might find our way into the "right" conference when all is said and done. He has good connections and longevity. I just wish he would get a serious about marketing and fan growth. He has told me in the past that he wanted to focus on facilities, graduation, and academics, which he is awesome at. However, now we need to make money and build a fan base. That starts with getting students out to the games. That is the foundation for a future fan base and the guy in charge of that is a twit.
As for Dixie...it is done. Now Weber has to grow and face up to the challenge. I know there is a lot of talk about growth in Washington County, but the Wasatch Front is growing pretty fast too. Unfortunately, Weber County is going to grow insanely in the west and in central Ogden. It is already happening. The question is how do we take advantage of this growth as a university and as an athletics program?
