Dixie State (UT) to join WAC in 2020, football to FCS Independent

The Dixie State University Trailblazers (St. George, Utah) announced that they will be moving from Division II to the Western Athletic Conference starting July 1, 2020. Their football program will compete as an FCS Independent at that time as well. They have also already completed a three-game deal with Southern Utah, and they also claim to have games lined up with Montana State and Weber State.

Don’t see many new FCS programs pop up in the western United States. Some articles are also bringing up the possibility of other WAC schools adding football in order to create a second western FCS conference.

Crazy. The makes six d1 football programs in Utah. Utah has good HS football, but not enough top recruits to support that numbers of teams.

I would be disappointed if the Big Sky offered an invite any time soon

Unless they go to two, divisions or boot some of the California schools out

CWU won't be far behind. They are prepping their stadium for a D1 Ascension. I wonder of the Big Sky will consider splitting into 2 conferences to accommodate them.

Eastern would be wise to object at all costs to Central joining the Big Sky. The last thing Eastern should do is legitimize Central as a d1 school by letting them join the same conference. It would be very damaging to potentially lose in-state players to Central, of all teams.

I would agree Central would definitely hurt in recruiting.

Unless CWU puts up a nice D1 caliber stadium, with min capacity 10k... no entry into the BigSky. Nope! They’ll also try to make EWU & CWU rivals... :? :? :? I’d love to see Southern Utah & Northern Colorado exit the conference as well.

Why Southern Utah? They have at least been competitive in the Big Sky since joining and they even have plans for a Stadium Expansion. They even have a very decent Basketball arena, something most other Big Sky teams cant say. They're also natural rivals for Weber State and NAU and are a perfect Geographic fit.

1. Competitive - Any team that joins a new conference will eventually become competitive, assuming facilities are competitive. (Utah, Mizzou, NDSU, Boise St.)

2. Basketball Arena - Lots of BigSky teams have nice basketball facilities. (EWU, UM, MSU, WSU, UCD, & now PSU.) I don’t care about basketball.

3. Location - I’d argue that Cedar City is not a good fit for the Big Sky. I’d prefer EWU, UM, MSU, PSU, UI, ISU, WSU, & CSUS to be known as the Big Sky Conference, and the other institutions call themselves something else. Including NMSU if they drop... The Aggies should be “their conference’s” issue. A 13/14 team FCS conference is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of.

4. “Planned Stadium Expansion” - Southern Utah & Northern Colorado own the two worst stadiums in the conference. Followed by Idaho State, the dome is fine, it just needs a renovation, similar to what NAU & Idaho did with their indoor facilities. If ISU renovates “The Bengal Den” :) it could become an extremely tough place to play!
Both UNC & SUU need to EXPAND their facilities to fit in this conference.
