Do Not Cut Down the Nets

Call me superstitious, but please leave the nets up on Saturday. We know what has happened the last few times we have taken them down after a regular season championship. I know Maddawg has been waiting to storm the court all season long. So I think we should storm the court with a win on Saturday. But don't touch those nets! In the next two weeks they will age like a fine bottle of wine and be even sweeter when we take them down on March 15th.

we wouuld have cut it down tonight had our game not ended before unc's. u cant ever cut down nets or storm courts/fields too often. lol

Cutting down the nets is great! I hope to see it happen come Saturday!!! With us hopefully clinching come Saturday, this should give the University enough time to market this tournament and hopefully see lots of seats!! I know marketing is another topic though... :?

I hope to buy my all tournament pass come saturday after the game!!!

I want that W on Saturday, but I'm superstitious. I don't think we should touch the nets or storm the court until we have our bid to the NCAA tourney sealed.

I have never seen the 'Cats make the Big Dance when they cut the nets down after clinching the regular season. Leave them up and then cut them down in a couple of weeks. Rahe's first year they didn't cut the nets and the reached the Big Dance. the next two time, they cut the nets and lost the tournament. Leave them up, Leave them up.

It's really about the players. I say that they should do what makes them feel the best. The coaches should talk to them about it, at some point, and let them decide.

Cutting them down does not make a team lose the tournament. :coffee:

I know it is ridiculous to blame losses on cutting down a net, but let us look at recent history. The team didn't cut the nets in 07 and they reached the NCAA Tournament. They cut the nets down before winning the tournament in 09, 10, both times the Cats lost in the tournament.

Yes, it isn't something that can be quantifiably proven, but something happened those two other years that suggests cutting down the nets early is a bad thing. In 03, Craven's wouldn't allow his team to cut the nets till they had accomplished the total goal...not only winning the conference championship, but also, the tournament and getting to the Dance. The teams in the 90s didn't cut the nets till they were dancing. I say...don't cut till the job is completely done.

It might have something to do with a teams mindset. Qualitatively, we could look at this as a something that deals with a players psychology. If you cut early, they, the players, relax and think the season is done and not play as hard. They allow themselves to be out toughed and out played. Gotta do everything you can to ensure that the Championship not only goes through Ogden, but also, that the trophy stays in Ogden.

I agree 100 percent. However, I find storming the courts to be a far more egregious offense than cutting down the nets. Save THAT one for March 15.

Yes. What you said, sir! :notworthy:

Everyone has made good points, both pro and con. That is why it would need to be discussed with the team and left in their hands. That way, they take ownership of the decision and will fight like hell to back it up. That is my only point. What we, as fans, think about it is secondary. We have no control over future outcomes. To get the power out of the players, you need to empower the players. Best way to do that is to let them choose. :thumb: :thumb:

:+1:
I can think of 10 or so good reasons we didn't win the tourney on our home floor two years in a row, none of them had to do with cutting down the nets...

oldrunner with the words of wisdom. You guys are all WAY too superstitious. We lost in '09 because we underestimated MSU and played our worst game of the season and we lost in '10 because we didn't want to double team Anthony Johnson for whatever reason.

If the guys want to cut down the nets, I say let them. Most of them weren't here when we won our last regular season conference title. There have been some bumps in the road this season, but they've pulled it together and are clearly the best team in the conference. It'll be fun for the fans and create excitement for the tournament in a couple weeks. If they don't want to cut down the nets until they win the whole thing, I am fine with that too. Whatever keeps these guys motivated.

:coffee: :coffee: There you go using the "I" you selfish selfish man!!!  Let the players choose, screw the fans, this is not their decision. :coffee: :coffee:

1. The nets probably won't get much wear and tear next week from the women's games.
2. With the potential of Hot Dog Huff playing 3 games on our court, the new nets will just get greasy and grimy anyways.
Just leave them up!

tal,

it is worth nothing that 07 didnt cut down the net because it was such a tight race and we just didnt actaully have the opportunity. they cut it down after a home game when we hav clinched from what i can see.

http://weberhoops.com/schedule2007.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

notice our last home game was feb 14, yikes. then our last away game was feb 26. so i dont think we wanted to cut down the net at sac after we got served and had 25 turnovers. but if you rmember it back in 07 nau actaully had the chance and cut down their net even though we got to host. it just worked out for them and not us.

09 we destroyed everyone and clinched a good 2 months before the season ended. we had a 4 game lead on 2nd that yr.

2010 it just made sense, our last home game was ISU, of course ur gonna do celebrating when isu is in town. its the ultimate insult! we were 12-2 w/ 2 games to go and unc was 12-4. so we clinched.

after thinking about it i agree with skills here. the excitement i heard from the players thursday about possibly doing this on saturday i wouldnt want to try and stop it. they want to cut down the nets i say let them. build the excitement for the tourney make the kids that show up for this game want to come back over spring break

I agree that it should be the player's decision. If they're excited to do it, by all means they should. The regular season BSC championship is a great accomplishment, and should be celebrated. I know it's not the most important championship that we all want to celebrate but it's still worthy of celebration. As for the superstition or player let down part....that's on them, I hope they're smart enough and hungry enough to punch their ticket that they go out and get it done.
