Does EB3 get the start against Portland State?

EB3 looked pretty phenomenal in the First Half, not so phenomenal in the Second. Was that due to Hawks adjustments to limit him and thus the rest of the Eagle offense? Or Coach Best employ more conservative strategies for the Second Half? (offense and defense)

Looked more conservative..might also have something to do with McPherson being out as well.
I would go with EB3

When McPherson left, our offense pretty much turned into garbage. Maybe you start Barriere to prove a point, but you certainly have Gubrud ready to go if it stagnates. I'm really disappointed with our receivers and RBs not named Sam McPherson. This is not a productive bunch.

Dorton, Williams, and McPherson all went down at different points in the game. If those guys aren't dead, we need them ready to go next week.

I say make it an open competition and whoever has the best week of practice gets the start.

This.

It's pretty tough to bench a kid who had one of the most prolific seasons at QB in the history of FCS last year, is 17-5 as a starter, including 2 playoff wins, a win over a FBS, and a win in Missoula, in favor of a kid who is 1-0 as a starter with a nice but statistically mediocre first game against a down opponent.

I disagree. Just speaking in general terms, it's all about what you've done for me lately. Ask Mike Leach, lol.

My impression of the Falk situation is he was pulled in a game and started the next, business as usual. Is that what you are reffering to?
As far as our dilemma, ( a good one to have) you ride the horse that got you here. Sure GG made a mistake and has paid his dues now forgive and move on. If EB3 didn't beat him out for the job in practices all season long why start the challenge again. We need consistency going into the playoff season.
IMO EB# did earn himself more playing time, to gain experience, in the Portland State game after we get a lead that is.

Are we sure the suspensions are lifted now? Pretty sure both players still have to appear in court this week and they may still be suspended.
Not sure what Gamboas violation this year was but he was out for several games

I believe Gamboa's was an NCAA sanction for substance abuse. With that said, it just feels like EB gives us a better shot to move the ball. I must admit, our O Line play has not been very good this season.

In our case, I agree with you that we have to ride GG, but I think it could be advantageous for both players to play. I think they should have a special package for EB3 and He can just be focused on learning that package at a high level (maybe 3 to 4 series).

It's a win/win/win. EB3 can get snapes so the game can slow down and help his learning curve, teams would have to prepare for both QBs, which increases their prep time, and GG would get competition, which is always healthy for continuous growth. Just my two cents.

Those were my exact thoughts. i hope they put in a specific package together (or 3) for EB3 and let him out there for 2 or 3 series to get the experience in & competition healthy. It worked with VA & Padron, let it rip again.

O-line play hasn’t been good, but at least two of the guys starting were not starters at the beginning of the year. Losing our best offensive linemen in Matt Meyer, plus Levao and a couple others as well really hurt.

I am less concerned about who starts at QB (think we can win with both) and more concerned about the inuries to McPherson, Dorton, and Williams. Hopefully they’re just sprains that limit them some in practice this week and they’re ready to play on Saturday.

The only reason EB3 looked good is because McPherson carried the offense. He was relied on heavily until the injury. The receiver's didn't really help EB3 out though.

No...and EOtS is spot on about McPherson who played one of the finest halves(if not the finest) of football this season. Sure hope he's ok..looked like a high ankle..anyone hear?

Read on his twitter that x-rays are today.

I think EB3 should get the start, however, it seemed like the play calling on Saturday was very conservative. There wasn't a ton going on downfield when EB3 broke the pocket for him to throw to. Because of this conservative play calling I feel like the coaches may not be comfortable yet giving him the reins. I think we see Gage come out and lead our team to victory next Saturday, maybe a Saturday at home gives him the perspective and he comes out on fire.

Hope EB3 gets another shot soon though, I think he has something special.

There were people on this board clamoring for Gubrud to lose his starting job over numbers quite a bit better than what Barriere posted this week. The problem is that we don't have dominating receivers and need some semblance of a running game to keep defenses honest. There have been times where we've had that, and other times where we haven't. When McPherson was in the line-up, we had it on Saturday, when he got hurt, we lost it. Interestingly, Barriere looked pretty solid when McPherson was in the game, very mediocre when he wasn't.

I think the coaches may start Barriere this weekend as a statement, and if he plays well, we can continue to roll the dice with him. Clearly, the kid has talent. But we'll certainly need Gage ready to step in. Even if Barriere starts and plays well, I'd expect Gubrud to play. We don't want him out of action for two consecutive weeks before the playoffs start.

Interested in also seeing what will happen in the off season.
I hate saying this but would not be shocked to see one of them leave after spring practices...especially with the success of Hennessey at Central.

I doubt anyone leaves. Gage has one year left, Barriere is a freshman. He appears to be the heir apparent. Therefore, if the plan doesn't change, Eric would take over as a junior when Gubrud graduates.

Hennessy's situation was different. If Gage had beaten him for the starting job, he'd never have been a starter.

I don't think anyone leaves. EB3 will see playing time even if he's not named the starter next season. After that, he has 2 full seasons to do his thing.
