Dome to be ready for home opener

The Walkup Skydome's facelift is nearly complete.

Driven by safety and outstanding issues regarding standards outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Association, renovations to the Skydome are starting to look like, well, a modern-day athletic facility.

Built in the 1970s, the dome had fallen below current building code requirements, and the university decided to upgrade the facility, including new accommodations for those with disabilities.

"The main reason for the remodel was due to safety and ADA issues," assistant dome director Ron Morrison said. "The upgrades help to provide the seating for all different types of disabilities that might walk or roll through the door."

The dome's remodel also puts its fire safety system up to date with codes.

At least everyone will have a chairback now so that could be a new marketing ploy used to fill the Dome.

Does the Dome normally have concerts and other gatherings besides sports? If so, would the reduced capacity cause other potential tenants to bail for another venue?

Generally no - and there really is no other big venue in Flagstaff.

Used for graduation as well.

there have been concerts there, but 10K would be plenty. But very hard to get good acts up to Flag.

Concerts seem to be rare occasions. They still do at least a few high school football. I know there are some special inter-state games going on this year. Flag High and Coconino High used to play a few games there if my memory serves me? Arizona Cardinals train there. Pretty sure track and field does the whole shabang there indoors? Collingwood FC of the Australian Rules Football League has trained up there. Running out of other uses....stupid college kids climb up the side and ski/sled down. Back when I was in good cardio shape, I used to run stairs with friends for, uhm, I guess fun. Up til last year the Dome was used for NAU basketball and for hockey way back pre-1990s.

Big music acts are a lot like big college sports programs (looking at you ASU and UofA). They want nothing to do with playing or performing in a smaller college town at 7,000+ feet elevation.
