dominguez

I really liked Ian's blog. I know they miss some classes when on the road, but if everybody else can qualify, that means he's not doing the work. I echo the need to get his sh*t together and wake up. I hope he can stay eligible the rest of his career @ PSU.

Curtis had grade problems last year and it appears that he got everything squared away. Hopefully JD can follow suit.

Student first, athlete second. We don't put a lot of guys to the next level, so I like to think that the majority of our student athletes will enter the next phase of their life with a quality education.

My son is a student at PSU, and his comment was: "Do you know how easy it is to maintain a 2.0 GPA??" It doesn't take much effort. Just a little discipline, which unfortunately some students don't have.

I agree that it's easy to get a 2.0, but these guys do miss tons of classes, and spend so much time @ practice & games that there's little time for homework. That, on top of the fact that most want social lives makes it tough. Study habits are hard to form this far along for guys who have never done well in the classroom.

This from goviks.com, bold is mine:
"Dominguez is currently working to resolve is (sic) eligibility issues and may return, however there is no timetable for that."

I suspect that there's a correlation between student-athletes and grades at NAIA/NCCAIII schools and those at Division I schools. As you move up the scale the pressure mounts, practice is more demanding, and thoughts of pro ball loom (and academics moves to the side). Students aren't any better at any level, but face it, great athletes who are poor students are more likely to be let in to Division I schools - precisely the schools demanding greater discipline. It's a wonder they finish at all - if they do. So it goes in American culture - the dream of riches, follow the hype (and by the way, there are classes to attend!)

Definitely there is an attitude that school is secondary to basketball (or whatever sport one plays). Many of these "student" athletes would not be attending post-secondary institutons at all (i.e. they have no interest in pursuing higher education), if they weren't great basketball players.

P.S.: I really have nothing of value to add to this discussion, I'm just trying to post because I'm close to 100, and I'm tired of being a "Walk on." I just want to make it to the next level, whatever that is !!

Lets be realists. Being a realtively new addition to D1 and without much history PSU gets kids that are "borderline" in some way, Either grades, character, or their game. If we they have great games, character and grades they are going Pac 10 or better.

Hmmm, JD had academic issues at UP, too... and not just the final GPA to lead him to leave... there was a game or 2 during the season he missed due to "academic issues" too... I hope he can pull it together and take school seriously!

Fantastic. I only hope he realizes school is more than just this quarter, and keeps up his adacemics until March, and then in the April to June quarter.........100 !!!

Not to be a wet blanket (but I am !!): I sure as heck hope Bone and his staff are paying more attention to their players' academic standing than they have in the past. They shouldn't get too carried away with what's happening on the court, and shouldn't forget the players' academics.

A number of guys on this team need constant help and nurturing, and the next few weeks are important academically for this quarter. While you may see this as negativism or fear mongering, I see it more as good planning, smart thinking, and proactiveness, and hope Bone is on top of it (which I strongly suspect he's not !!).

What a disappointment it would be to the loyal PSU fans (not to mention the other players) if there were more academic problems this term. Otherwise, I hope the marks aren't posted (or official) until at least March 13, 2008 !!! /users/31/07/37/smiles/269784.gif

Marks won't be posted until March 25th after 5pm. It might buy some time, but in the end they'd better be over 2.0.
