EWU takes on Saint Mary's at 5:30 tonight. A powerhouse in the WCC, and off to a hot start at 6-0. They haven't beaten anyone too impressive, but have only had one close game against Drake where they won by 4. I believe the game can be watched online here - http://www.smcgaels.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Teams Stats: Saint Mary's averages 79ppg (71st in the country), 37.2 rebounds (134th), .483 fg% (51st). Eastern averages more points at 81.6ppg, more rebounds at 39.4 per game, and a better field goal percentage at .498. The biggest difference I have seen is that Saint Mary's has averaged 20 fouls drawn per game, compared to Eastern's 15. This means they get to the line a lot more, (where they are shooting about 15% higher than the Eagles). Eastern is also giving up around 70 points per game, while Saint Mary's is only giving up 63. Just looking at the stats alone, doesn't seem to give one team a huge edge over the other.
Individual Stats: Their most important player is Brad Waldow a 6'9 260lb PF. He is averaging 18 points per game, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks, while also shooting around 68% from the field. He is doing that all while only averaging 25.5 min per game, so he is going to be a load. He outweighs Venky Jois (whom will likely guard him) by roughly 30pounds. Venky will have an edge with his athleticism.
Another key player for them is 6'4 guard Stephen Holt, who will likely match up with Tyler Harvey. He averages 13ppg, 6assists, and 5 rebounds.
This game will be tough. Saint Mary's has proven themselves not only in the WCC, but at a national level the past few years. They have a good fan base that will make a hectic atmosphere. If Eastern can stay together, and play with maturity, they will have a good shot. Let me know what you all think! Go Eagles!
