OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 12, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Oct. 10. Northern Arizona quarterback Michael Herrick and Montana wide receiver Marc Mariani are the Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Weber State defensive tackle Ryan Eastman is the Defensive Player of the Week. Portland State kicker Zach Brown is the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Herrick, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior from Valencia, Calif., completed 30 of 40 passes (75 percent) for 388 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Northern Arizona’s 23-10 upset of No. 24 Montana State in Bozeman, Mont. Herrick threw a 14-yard TD pass to Ed Berry with 4:43 to play, giving the Lumberjacks’ a 20-10 lead. The 388 yards was the 13-best single-game effort in school history. This is Herrick’s first Player of the Week honor.
Mariani, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior from Havre, Mont., caught six passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns in No. 14 Montana’s 35-23 come-from-behind home win over No. 15 Cal Poly. Trailing 10-0 midway through the second quarter, Mariani took a short pass from Justin Roper and raced 84 yards into the end zone. With 9:03 remaining, Mariani hauled in a 68-yard scoring reception from Andrew Selle to give UM a 28-17 lead. Mariani averaged 33.3 yards per catch. This is Mariani’s fourth career Player of the Week Award.
Eastman, a 6-foot, 270-pound sophomore from Honoulu, Hawai’i, returned from an injury that sidelined him three games to spearhead Weber State’s defense in a 31-13 upset of No. 14 Eastern Washington in Cheney. Eastman tallied a career-high three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss, and helped the defense hold Eastern Washington to just 35 rushing yards on 27 attempts. Eastman finished with six total tackles. All three of Eastman’s sacks helped stopped Eagle drives, including one that came on third down. This is Eastman’s first Player of the Week award.
Brown, a 6-1, 180-pound freshman from Keizer, Ore., converted field goals of 50, 40 and 33 yards in Portland State’s 23-18 road victory over Northern Colorado. Brown’s 50-yard field goal in the second quarter put the Vikings up 10-8. His 33-yarder in the second quarter closed Northern Colorado’s lead to 15-13. His 30-yarder with 1:44 to play proved to be the final score of the game, played in snowy, windy conditions. Brown also made two extra points to finish with 11 total points. This is Brown’s second Player of the Week honor this season.

Amazing that he hasn't stepped on the field in a month and can make this kind of impact!

This kid has a motor that does not stop, on some of the plays, he was the backside pursuit on Taiwan Jones and was only a step away from catching him. In the 4th quarter, he almost sacked Nichols, but somehow Nichols got the ball of but took a bone crushing hit to the ground. When Nichols got up, it looked like his GPS needed some adjusting.

Great to see the ENTIRE Defense play some real football again....keep it up, and get the Win!

Remarkable improvement in the entire Wildcat defensive performance against a playoff-caliber offense.

Congratulations to Ryan "the BEAST" Eastman for leading the way.

I agree, EWU is a playoff-caliber team. The RB Jones was something special; once he couldn't run the ball, they gave him as many touches as possible with quick passes in the flats, kick/punt returns. He is a bundle and very, very shifty. in retrospect, it is nothing short of amazing that the Defense shut this guy down on the run. in one of the first exchanges, #95 hit Jones as soon as he got the handoff.....Jones looked a little surprised.....and that set the tone of the game.....The Beast vs. The Rabbit, haha, just kidding.

The whole Defense played GREAT!!!!
