According to the below link, Ehlo is definitely headed to EWU and his son may join the team also.

GOOD GUY, BUT A BAD HIRE.

YOU NEVER HIRE FRIENDS IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL THAT HAVE NO D-1 EXPERIENCE AND YOU NEVER HIRE SOMEONE THAT MIGHT BRING THEIR SON WITH THEM.

EXAMPLE AFTER EXAMPLE OF THIS BACKFIRING WITH PREVIOUS D-1 COACHES.

DISAPPOINTING TO SAY THE LEAST.

Jim Hayford, Eastern Washington’s new men’s basketball coach, refused on Friday to confirm a McClatchy News report that said former Washington State and NBA standout Craig Ehlo has accepted an offer to become one of his assistants.

“I will confirm that Craig is one of over 120 people that have completed on-line applications, and that I have discussed the issue with him,” said Hayford, who was officially introduced as the Eagles’ coach earlier this week. “I have a close 10-year relationship with Craig, but no job offers have been made.”

Ehlo, a local resident who played 14 seasons in the NBA and later coached boys basketball at Rogers High School for three years, could not be reached for comment. Hayford, who was hired away from NCAA Division III power Whitworth University to replace Kirk Earlywine at Eastern, said he has not talked to Ehlo, who now does television color commentary for various basketball broadcasts, in more than a week.

Hayford added he was still in the process of interviewing potential staff members and would make no further comments at this time.

I like both hires. The Whitworth coach has shown that he can run a successful program and he knows the area, unlike Earlywine. Ehlo is a local guy that can bring some interest and a little bit of the spotlight to EWU. Ehlo coaching resume is a little thin, but he is not the man in charge and could be a huge help when it comes to recruiting.

I think EWU could be in a good position to do great things in basketball. Plus, we have to trust our AD because he hasn't made a bad move yet.

I was excited about the hiring of Jim but I do have my concerns and have heard other express the same. I hope he can be successful. His greatest challenge will be recruiting. He is bringing an assistant from Whitworth and now Ehlo. Ehlo struggled at Rogers. Most telling is that between the three of them, they have never recruited a single division one athlete. Not a one. There isn't a single black coach on the staff. While everyone, including me, wants more local players, bringing a coaches son and other players will only make our team whiter, not necessarily better. There is also the chance that a Whitworth player may be coming too. All these pieces do not paint a good picture from a talent perspective. I pray I am wrong.

I trust the AD. Ultimately I think it's a good hire but I think the concerns of the coaching staff not having recruited at the Division I level are valid. Time will tell, but I think if we can get the majority of our team back next year we'll be alright.

I can only speak to the credibility it would bring to the program if Hayford could hire Ehlo. Seems to me it would be a great opportunity if he is willing to take on this challenge. As far as his son, we hear of the bad instances where a father coaches his son but there are many other incidences where it works out great. Not knowing the relationship between the two, it would be difficult to assume it is a bad idea.
One year from now I see many more great things happening to the athletic dept overall.
Good Job Bill Chaves and Go Eags!!

Full disclosure, I am guilty of this myself.

Sometimes people get caught up with a name, as opposed ability. In an assistant coach you need someone who is totally loyal, will work 24/7 and is willing to travel the world to get the right players.

With all do respect, I do not see Mr. Ehlo as being a good fit. I hope I am wrong, but based on the way he did his lack of homework and never knowing about the opposing team on his tv broadcasts, he has to show me something.

Who can name the assistant coaches of the Washington Huskies? Probably not too many, but they are an outstanding group who gets their job done on an effective basis. Name recognition can be deceptive.

Where did your son decide to go?
I was impressed to hear each player gets 1 on 1 sessions with Ehlo. How many other programs can a kid get 1 on 1 with a 14 yr NBA vet? These kids pay a lot of money to go to camps where they do not get that level of coaching.
It appears the future has great promise for the Eagles.
