Without knowing who will take his place it is tough to form a conclusion, but on the surface this seems like a bad hit for the program. I notice his son Austin is not on the current football roster.
Correlation or coincidence?

clawman,
I agree with you, Mark Axton will fit in properly for our team. Mark played overseas for quite a while his wife taught school overseas, she is a graduate of Shadle Park High/EWU (Cheerleader). My :twocents: Vic

If you want to read an article that makes a good case for the kind of person who should be working with young athletes, google 'Axton Answered' (an article in the Inlander, March 17, 2004 by Howie Stalwick. Stalwick describes him as "clean- cut, soft-spoken, well-mannered, honor student, all conference basketball player, all-around good guy." Stalwick quotes Axton's college coach at EWU, Ray Giocoletti: " Marc is probably as balanced a human being as I've been around.

In high school at Foss, AXton scored 41 points in a state tournament game, was point guard on a state championhip team, and was the state player of the year. At Eastern (2001-5) he had a career 12.9 average (16.2 as a senior). He scored 33 points against Gonzaga in 2004. He was Big Sky Freshman of the year, and all Big Sky three years. He was a member of Eastern's first Big Sky Championship team, and the first to play in the NCAA tournament. He was team captain, most valuable player and best defender in 2005. After college he played professionally in Europe from 2005-2011, and from 2012 to the present works as a sales rep for Mtn West Medical in Arizona. (He might be making too much money to come to Eastern, but he did tell me once when I asked him if would like to come back to Eastern as a coach, "I would love to."

He hasn't had head coaching experience, but should he be considered for the open asst coaching position at Eastern?

I will admit it was a great recruiting tool to have a former (well known) NBA player on our coaching staff, but personally when he tried to leave mid season either last season or the season before . . . I lost a lot of respect for him. I thought the team went into a spiral after that. So I actually am not that tore up by the loss. When you commit for a season you commit for the season and not try to jump ship for another job (family illnesses and other personal issues are definitely excusable for not finishing the season). I also see this as very bad timing with the summer camps and things like that are happening . . . .plus a lot of the shuffling of good assistants has already taken place so we will now have to swipe or try to swipe someone Else's assistant or get really creative in who we find to replace him.

Best of luck in your Future Endevours Ehlo.

So let me get this straight, you are an assistant coach at a small regional school like EWU and an NBA team wants to interview you for a NBA coaching position and you would not explore the opportunity? Laughable. Ehlo is a class act and good person. Period.

Call it laughable if you want, but I have a tough time with someone being recruited by one of our coaches and then trying to jumping ship mid season regardless of the other opportunity. A lot these kids come to schools because of the relationships that are built through the recruiting process and then that relationship is just abandoned mid season. Plus it was not just an interview . . http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2011/dec/04/source-craig-ehlo-accepts-coaching-job-with-nbas/

The "source" was obviously wrong as the job was never offered to Ehlo. I do find your statement regarding leaving mid-season to be laughable. While I love EWU, we are backwater for sure. I don't care what profession you are in, but if the leading organization for whatever you do shows interest with a substantial pay increase, 99.9% of people will explore the opportunity. The fact that his departure was announced by an UN-named "source" though it was never offered isn't fair to Ehlo.

The two issues are separate. Whatever mess is going on right now is sad. I've met the man once, but know many that do know him that find the recent events bizarre given their very positive relationship with him. There is always more to the story and I hope his family and him are okay and weather this storm. Relationships are often messy and it is sad to see this played out in the press. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Wow. I wish the best for him and his family.

GoldenEagle,
Thanks on the info on Coach Ehlo, and glad he is doing well. I talk to his son who is still playing FB for our team. BTW, for your information, Vic Jr. turned a young 54 today, and still in into SPORTS. He is PE Teacher at West Valley High, here in Spokane, Coaches Track, FB, etc. He goes to work @ 7am, and doesn't get home until about 7 pm. He has his own business where he teaches Athletes how to build up their Speed, Quickness Training, and Agility. He have had former Eagles, i.e. Taiwan Jones, and many more of EWU men and women Athletes. Look me up when you come to the games, I sit in Red Back Seas Section, Row 26 Seats 5-8. 2nd row from top facing field on right side after you enter from top behind Press Box. Noticed Vernon Adams and Cooper Kupp, are on the Walter Payton List, and Ronnie Hamlin are on the "Buck Buchanan List already. Have a great evening. Vic Wallace

To All Concerned,
There are Rosters published for Football Team, Men BB Team, Volley Ball Team. On Football Roster there are some names that is missing, probably due to the Summer. Hope they are all back on July 31st, which is the 1st practice for the returning Players. You will be surprised to see who is playing where on the roster. Haven't checked for a roster for the Women BB Team, their roster should be out also. Have a Great Sunday. Vic Wallace

Vic. Actually, “EWU98” supplied the link to the article and update on Craig Ehlo. I just hope everything is improving with the Ehlo family.

Great to hear that Vic Jr. is very active and I’m sure he is in great shape. Yes, I will introduce myself to you. I might see you at the fall camp scrimmage in August. I have a ritual of riding my mountain bike from the Spokane Valley, then connecting with the Fish Lake trail to Cheney to watch the final fall camp scrimmage. Hope to see you at the fall camp scrimmage.

GoldenEagle,
Here is hoping EWU98 accept my apology for giving you credit for the post of Coach Ehlo, and not him. Since you are in the Valley, stop by West Valley High, and see if you can talk to Vic. Yes, he is still in great shape. I traveled the Cheney Spokane Road a week ago, and it is very nice and safe to see how they have fixed it up due to all the deaths in that area. The only way I will not be at the Scrimmages, Games, is if the "GREAT MAN" above calls me. My dad used to tell me before he died 30 years ago, " he would say "Vic when he died he was going up to heaven, when I go I will be going down under, because I was so bad" All in joke as usual. I miss that man, and he was like a book to our children, he spent some time here with my family when he came here from Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, two years to be exact, he used to speak Spanish, German, and other languages to them. He was a young 93 years of age when he passed. I've been kind of sick over the weekend, slept most of the time, now here I am at 02:40 am, unable to sleep. :( I am very glad I am now retired, I can sleep when I want, or as long as I want. Good Morning. Vic Wallace
