EIU's Garappolo wins Payton award

Pretty close if you ask me, but my guess is being a senior helped. I am shocked that Jensen was so far apart from West though.

Walter Payton Award............1st....2nd....3rd....4th....5th....Total

1. Jimmy Garoppolo, E. Illinois....74.....37.....13......8......3.....576

2. Vernon Adams, E. Washington.....30.....47.....26.....13......4.....446

3. Terrance West, Towson...........22.....22.....35.....27.....13.....370

4. Brock Jensen, North Dakota St....8......9.....12.....13.....11.....149

Vernon took second in votes.

That tells me it was a tie and the tie went to the Senior from EIU.

VA has two more years to win it.

Not that Garoppolo wasn't deserving, but the disparity was much larger than it should've been if they based it simply on seniority.

JG had 576 points
VA had 446 points
TW had 370 points

While I still feel that VA is the better all-around QB, hard too argue to much with them going with the Senior. VA will win the Payton at least once before he's done - Bank it.

It is especially difficult for underclassmen to win the Payton Award because unlike in FBS where the best players leave early, in FCS top players usually stay through their senior year.

Some of those votes are for Baber, that guy has a better press agent than JayZ; although I think being a senior is an advantage. Is it possible he did more with less at EIU? Maybe.

Huge honor today for Eastern in Coach B, Kupp and VA being recognized for excellence! Congrats to one and all!
