Second Team

WR Morris Norisse
OG Tyler Worthley
CB Osagie Odiase

Honorable Mention

QB Garrett Safron
TE T.J. Knowles
RB Ezekiel Graham
DT Matt Lawrence
DE Avery White
ILB Todd Davis
ILB Jeff Badger
S Ryan McMahon

I HIGHLY disagree with this list. In particular, Graham and Davis should have been FIRST TEAM (where we were shut out), and Odiase shouldn't have made ANY of the lists as he screwed up WAY too much....

Anways, congrats to the Hornets who were honored!

Wow,I don't think you Hornet bloggers truly understand the secondary position! I haven't been able to comment on the blog too much this season due to high work volume, but wow to bash Odiase! Come on he is the best corner in the big sky our problem is extremely lackluster safety and line backer play. I love the way Mc Mahon, Badger, and Davis play the run in this defensive Scheme, BUT a Huge BUT they have an extremely hard time defending the pass. Armstrong and Odiase had an amazing season they had No help from the linebackers or safety's. Mc Mahons pass break ups were off of big hits and not solid coverage. I was actually surprised Odiase didn't make first team and Armstrong didnt make second or at least honorable mentions, hey don't forget the guy is a freshman. If you look at all the crucial passing situations, the pass went down the middle which is open due to the LBs being so run happy. Even the only offensive touchdown during the causeway classic was on Mr. Davis getting torched by the Faggies play calling. Davis would have made first team if he took a more balanced approach to the LB position he was a GREAT run stopper but how many PBU did he have or interception? Odiase screwed up way less than most of the defense, what corner do you know on any level who has to save the the play so many times? And to your comment about his aggressiveness I believe Odiase is over aggressive at times, but I love it. I would like to know where you can say the corners or Odiase in general screwed up in your point of view? I think all season Saffron has been taking a lot of heat and although some is deserved we all must admit he has been much smarter in his decision making. I will not blame the last pick during the Causeway on him. I feel he can get a better touch on the deep ball to Norrise, but other than that he had a very good soph season.

All in all I think you should understand coverage and the secondary position before you discredit any of the Hornets. The Swiss cheese play came from the linebackers and safety's.

First off congrats to all the Hornets that received some recognition. Given the expanded conference, there are a lot more players vying for conference accolades so getting a conference award is no easy feat. I agree with BG for the most part. IMO CB is the 2nd hardest position to play. They are on an island and have to go against players who are usually half a foot taller than them. Where I think SH is coming from is the hope was Odiase would become a shutdown corner. Odiase showed a lot of promise in recent seasons but he had plenty of lapses from time to time this season and got beat quite often which is not good considering he is a 3rd year starter. I do agree that he is our best corner and being in a pass happy conference like the BSC makes it tough on DB’s in this league.

As far as the rest of the pass defense goes, I agree. Davis is a complete liability defending the pass due to his lack of speed. Some of this has to be on Parker. He needs to be smarter about getting in the right packages on down and distance situations (Fernandez and Allen would probably fair better in passing situations at the LB spot). Armstrong showed promise but it won’t mean a whole lot if he can’t stay healthy. I also agree that McMahon was a run stopper first, hard hitter 2nd, and pass defender 3rd. This season, the pass defense was horrid anyway you want to look at it and everyone got beat at one point or another. The key moving forward will be addressing this issue, even just getting the pass defense to be just average would make this defense as a whole a lot more efficient.
