End of Season grades

So, our 18-19 campaign ended, much like the 17-18 did, getting curb stomped by our last opponent. Last year it was Northern Colorado and this year, Montana. Weber did win 18 games (16 of those were DI) and at one time was in total control of the conference race. Well, until, February. Like the previous two seasons, the Cats totally fell apart again, at the end.

Coaching: C
Randy would get a solid C. Yes, he is a good coach and his players like him and the team continues to experience success, but players are not developing and worst of all, players have never been as selfish in the Randy Rahe era as they were this year. This might not be his worst team, wins and losses wise, but it was by far the worst one to watch and watch compete. They were soft and ill-prepared. Is the tail really wagging the dog? Other reasons why Randy gets a C. He still hasn't figured out a good, consistent, in bounds play, beating the zone, or a trap. And, worst of all, his teams still fall apart at the end of games and lose when they shouldn't. The Randy Rahe slow-down. One theory behind why his teams fall apart at the end of the season is his insistence that his player stop lifting. WTF?? Uh...why would you do that to your players? If anything, they should lift more and practice less. Weird, out of date, theory on his part. As for the assistants, solid Ds. Poor player development, bad in game adjustments, poor game preparation, and worst of all, mismanagement of players. We had two 5th year bigs and they were wasted. Whoever is in charge of the bigs, gets a solid F and really should be shown the door.

Best wins: BYU, UNCO, and Central Michigan
Worst Losses: SUU (twice), ISU, SAC, PSU, and UM at the tournament.

You seemed pretty nice on the Rahe's grade. I think a D is more fitting, and more realistic. The assistants, I would give all a F, maybe Duft a D- for longevity purposes. Coaching sucked, and not good enough to get a passing grade. Fails all the way around.

Remember how first, tough and unified the kids were. Besides Patton, none of the kids were highly recruited or considered highly talented. This was a team. This is what community involvement. Randy needs to quit searching for the next Damian Lillard and go find guys like Arturus Valieka. I have said it a few times on this forum before, but I’ll take a workhorse over a show horse any day. I can’t believe how soft this team was. They made average players look like strong post up players. There were no scrappers and very few moments of high energy defense.

If they continue recruiting the high talent and low energy players, this team is going to keep sliding. Talent won’t chase down a loose ball or box out for a rebound, only workhorses do that.

Here’s hoping they can shake off the doldrums and Rahe can drink a cup of wake up juice and get fired up and light a fire under his team when needed. This might include the occasional benching or yelling at players, or in game adjustments, heaven forefend.

Glad they didn’t waste money on a postseason tournament. You don’t reward a collapse like that.
