Spokane has made a trade it hopes will solve its quarterback issues, but it came at a hefty price.

The Shock dealt standout defensive end Khreem Smith and starting center Antonio Narcisse to Utah for quarterback Erik Meyer and starting center Raymond McNeil. Meyer, the former Eastern Washington Eagle, was Kyle Rowley's backup in Spokane last season.

“I love and respect every player that has played for me. This is very bittersweet, but it will help us more as a team. Right now we are 1.5 games out of the playoffs and with seven games to go, we have our sights set on making a playoff run,” Shock coach Rob Keefe said. “In the postseason, it’s important not to have the best individuals, but the best team. These moves make our team better and that is what’s important right now.”

Spokane (4-7) dropped its second straight game without Rowley (shoulder) and Bill Stull (knee) on Saturday, falling to Kansas City. Casey Hansen, the starter the last two games, led Spokane to just one offense-generated touchdown in the first half.

The wait is almost over for Erik Meyer.

After four seasons as a record-setting quarterback for the Eastern Washington Eagles, Meyer has spent five often frustrating years trying to carve out a spot in professional football. He was a backup for the Arena Football League Utah Blaze when the Spokane Shock, in dire need of a quarterback, traded for Meyer last week.

Meyer hasn’t started since handling the last eight games of the 2007 NFL Europe season for the Cologne Centurions. He took most of the repetitions at Shock practice Monday. The team is coming off a bye week.

“It’s been a while,” Meyer said of being on top of the depth chart. “It was fun to go out there and compete and know I’m starting Friday. I’m just really excited and preparing the best I can.”

Meyer thought his opportunity would finally come in Utah, where he joined former Shock offensive coordinator Matt Sauk, but an injury in training camp opened the door for Tommy Grady.

“Personally I think he would have had the starting job if he hadn’t pulled his groin,” said center Raymond McNeil, who was part of the four-player trade that brought Meyer from Utah. “He’s a good leader, he knows the game and he studies the game. He’s a competitor.”

Wish I could watch the game, but I'll be a couple hundred yards away working. :|

Hope he tears it up though.

He looked GREAT!! It was good to see him scrambling to make something happen. His throws were right on and he showed typical Meyer leadership on the field.
Good Job Erik!!

Meyer finished the night completing 72 percent of his passes for 332 yards and seven touchdowns. Meyer was selected as the game’s National Guard MVP.

Hopefully he can keep this up and earn the starting job over Rowley when he comes back from injury. Atta boy Erik!

QB Meyer answers call for Shock

Once the deal was done, that’s when Rob Keefe’s phone started ringing.

It was no lazy, carefree Memorial Day for the Spokane Shock. Without a healthy, capable quarterback in a quarterback’s league, they were awash in desperation – losers of three of their last four games – and they hit upon the desperate measure: trading one of the Arena Football League’s premier defensive linemen to a division rival embroiled in the same playoff chase for its backup quarterback – and throwing in your center, to boot.

Explanations were in order – to the players Keefe would face in practice the next day.

Sure, it seems easy enough to grasp now, having seen Erik Meyer pilot the Shock to a 75-54 drubbing of the Philadelphia Soul on Friday night, in front of an NFL Network audience – and the smallest regular-season crowd in Shock history, 8,972.

But that night? Not so much.

“The biggest challenge,” Keefe acknowledged, “was getting the team to believe in him. We had Khreem Smith and Antonio Narcisse leaving us and I took a couple of phone calls late into the night from guys saying, ‘Coach, I trust you – but tell me why you did that. Do you know what you’re doing?’ And I owed them an answer.”

And then he owed Meyer some brutal candor.

“The very first day,” Keefe told him, “I need you to lead.”

I agree with all of your comments. Erik had a 72% completion. He threw for 332 yards, 7 touchdowns, 1 int. Erik was also the MVP/Offensive Player Of The Game. Great Job Erik.     :thumb:

HannahO,
Spoke with Troy yesterday, he stated he got his "Ticket Booth", just waiting to wrap up a few loose ends  :thumb: . Don't know the cost, how big it is, what is in it, etc. I will let Troy mention that once the loose ends are wrapped up.

Today is Graduation @ 9am at EWU. We are going out to see one of our Former Female BB Player get her "Teaching Degree", she is from the BIG Town Of Yakima.  ;) ;)
The turf has some white covering on it, with the Eagle Logo showing, it looks good. The covering was put on the turf to make sure no damage is done to the turf, ladies with heels dies not trip on the turf.

SE174,
Thanks for getting the picture of the new addition on the rear of Roos Press Box. It does look Outstanding.
Can't wait for the season to get started. Think the Players are all going to stick around for the Summer. They are supposedly due back around Aug. 8th. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic

Nice! He looks faster than I remember. Although I do remember that huge like 60 yard run he had, I think it was against Cal Poly.

To All,
According to todays news on KXLY 4, Erik Meyer will be starting this weekend against Chicago. Hoping Vigil will be ready to go, if not, he has other great Receivers he will let them have the ball. I think he will have a great game again. Vic

Erik Meyer given the starting nod over incumbent starter Kyle Rowley...

He sat out last week with a concussion he received in the game prior, but not before throwing 5 TDs and completing 15/19.

In the two games Meyer has started for the Shock this year, he's 41/55 (74.5%) for 534 yards and 12 TDs to I think only 1 INT.

Meyer tears it up, leading the Shock to their highest point total of the season once again.

uly 9, 2011 – Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock made history tonight. Not only did Spokane play the first regular season outdoor AFL game, the Shock also recorded its highest point total of the season in a 76-49 victory in front of a franchise-record crowd of 16,233.

The Shock played its most complete game of the season. Spokane’s potent offense scored on its first 11 possessions, while the defense created four turnovers (and scored on three of them).

Quarterback Erik Meyer, obtained from Utah in a trade a month ago, completed 15 of 19 passes for 166 yards and six touchdowns. He also had 17 rushing yards with two more scores. He left early in the fourth quarter with cramps and Kyle Rowley took over.

Crowd of 16,233, pretty good.

The last time I watched Meyer play at Joe Albi was in 2004 when he tore up MSU. Still remember that long QB draw he had at the end of the game that led to the winning td. :thumb:

Must have been 2003, because I don't remember Erik Meyer/EWU playing any games at Albi since I've became an Eagle fan in 2004.

Correct. 2003 was the last year we played at Albi.
