Good article in the News Tribune. Saw it a couple days ago posted on facebook by Eagle Athletics, but forgot to post it over here.
Probably going back to the time when Eastern Washington sprouted as a teachers college in the middle of a wheat field, its athletes and staff have been fueled by an underdog’s mentality.
They traditionally competed on a shoestring budget with local athletes who had been passed over by just about everybody else, and they used that all to keep them motivated.
In some important ways, Beau Baldwin hasn’t changed that. Nearly 70 percent of his football players were produced by high schools in Washington.
The Eagles’ athletic budget once again was the skimpiest in the Big Sky Conference, and his best defensive player was a fearless 5-foot-10 linebacker from Pullman (J.C. Sherritt), who somehow made 320 tackles the past two seasons.
But Baldwin has helped forever change the level of expectations among Eastern fans, and more impressively, altered the perception of what Eastern athletics can be.
