EWU vs MSU predictions (not for the squeamish)

I don't post predictions, and I think a lot will hinge on who comes back for Eastern this week. Getting information on injuries is second to impossible. Eagwatcher needs to pay us a visit and let us know who is practicing and who isn't. With two novice safeties, I'm deathly afraid Eastern can't stop Montana State.

The last thing we want is a must-score-every-drive game against McGhee, who as a senior, is probably going to hang onto the ball pretty well.

This is a very big test. Perhaps our biggest until playoffs. Before injuries, I was 100% certain we would take this game. Now, I am feeling it is a toss up.

My prediction is that we barely put a speed bump on Mcghee and Cody Kirk. We are going to have to lean on the offense for this game.

EWU wins, due to home field advantage: 49-46.

MSU is probably the team I respect most in the conference, but I am not too worried about this game.

MSU will try to run on us, which can be a problem, but they don't have a type of rushing attach that typically hurts us. I don't think stopping Kirk is going to be a problem. If he goes for more than 80 yds and maybe 1 td, I'd be shocked. Our injuries shouldn't change our Run D, if our DB's are having to tackle RB's, we are going to be in trouble no matter who is in the secondary. If we struggle with any part of their run game its going to be the with Johnson.

I don't think MSU will stop our passing attack. Last year Adams was pressured a lot and played his worst game as an EAG in Bozeman, this year he is a different player. I expect a big day from Vernon and if MSU tries to drop everyone back in coverage, we will run it on them all day long. I don't think other teams realize we actually have more rushing attempts than passing attempts this year, our ground game is solid and really, really healthy. We are clicking on all cylinders right now on offense and I don't think there is an FCS defense in the country that can stop us right now.

MSU may try to throw it on us and I would if I were them based on our injuries. It doesn't appear McGhee is 100% so that bodes well for us. I think we will bring a lot of pressure and keep DM running for his life the entire game, our D-Line is playing like absolute beasts right now.

Looking forward to a great game with two great teams, but I think EWU rolls in this one 45 - 20.

I've went thru the scoring stats on the top teams EWU has played (OSU, Toledo, SHSU, SUU, Griz), and we come out 36-35 in favor. MSU has played only (SMU and NAU) and came out ahead 33-19. So based on scoring stats it's difficult to predict. Eastern has been playing well their last 3 games vs SUU/UM/ISU, winning by an average score of 43-27 (+16 points). The Cats have played WSU/UCD/UNC, winning by an average of 34-20 (+14 points). So based on my above stats, EWU has the edge on offense 39-33 over MSU. Then, MSU has the edge on points given up on defense at 31-20 in their favor. these stats are based only on the respective teams LAST 3 games, and games vs TOP opponents. EWU has played (5), and MSU has played (2).
SINCE Eastern is at home and is on a 5 game winning streak, and MSU is on the road for the 2nd week in a row, this game will be close, EWU offense vs Bobcat defense. MSU will score 34 points based on MY above stats, and EWU will score 39. So there is my UNEXPERT analysis: 39-34 EWU!

Not sure that I am confident making a prediction because that implies some level of expertise and I am no expert just little more than a homer for the Eagles but here goes with my hope and expectation of this game.
We will limit McGee by containing him in the pocket. He is most dangerous when he gets out running around. Last year in Bozie we did a good job of containment and when we did get some pressure on him he tries to force the ball which leads to interceptions.
Our D-line has been controlling the line of scrimmage with quickness. As long as we cycle enough d-linemen in and out to keep a level of freshness we will limit the run, not stop it, limit it.
Play assignment football!! As much as some folks do not like it I LOVE the bend/don't break philosophy of defense and it will serve us well in this game. Keep the play in front of you.
I don't think (hope) the Boobcats will get into the red zone more than 1x per qtr and we will limit those to 2 TD's and 2 FG's for 20 points. Worst case if they convert 1 FG to a TD make that 24 points.
Wildcard- the Kitties avg 29 yds on kickoff returns and have 2 TD's If we score 6 times that is 7 kickoff opportunities for them. Our special teams have been good but we have to be top of our game there. Can you say Bo Schuetzle?
The Cats are +12 and we are only break even. Turnovers could be a big deal.
Our team speed is exceptional.
We should get into their red zone 2x per qtr. which will result in 4 td's and 2 FG' for 34 points. We have been getting some extra points blocked so am a little concerned about FG's. If we get any blocked it could be a change in MO but home field advantage should turn that back our way.
My greatest concern is Vernons tendency lately to throw it up and hope Cooper or Cory come down with it. I would imagine Flowers is licking his chops about now. Turnovers will be key in this game.
Play FAST
Play SMART
Final:
Eagles 34+
Boobies 24 max

Guys, predictions are like opinions which in turn are like A-holes; everybody's got one. :-) Thanks for your well thought out analysis on the potential game outcomes.

MSU will have a few big plays. Whether in the air or on the ground is debatable. Pretty good WR, Bleyskin and RB, Kirk.

No loser limps here. EWU scores over 40% of their TD's outside the redzone and that is likely to continue regardless of whether Kupp has a big game or not. If MSU takes him away with double coverage, EWU is DEEP at wideout with Clark, Hill, Bomber, Mitchell, Bourne et al. After reading Coulter's breakdown of how teams run against the Cats, we will see several big runs from our RB crew too. TO's are the only way this game stays close 3rd and 4th quarters. Like Beau always says, there is no panic in this team and they will continue to execute on offense regardless of what MSU does. EWU is ready to take the next step.

Consider EWU the irresistible force in this one.

Alright, I've waited all week to throw in my prediction, and finally, I'm ready:

EWU will come out firing behind the home crowd and MSU just won't be able to stop the Eagle offense as EWU will score two touchdowns in the 1st quarter. MSU answers with TD back before the end of the qtr.

After 1st qtr: EWU 14-MSU 7.

Each team throws up two TD's each in the 2nd qtr.

At the half: EWU 28-21

MSU comes out and evens up the score shortly into the 3rd qtr before EWU answers with a long TD pass to Kupp, then a fumble recovery and scores again to go up right near the end of the qtr.

At the end of 3: EWU 42-MSU 28

In the fourth qtr, MSU is forced to throw it more which leads to a Ronnie Hamlin INT. A long run by Forte puts EWU up 49-28 before MSU answers with one last TD near the end of the game.

Final score: EWU 49-MSU 35 :thumb:

The title was "not for the squeamish" so here ya go. I put it all out there!

We fall behind, go ahead, fall behind, go ahead, fall behind then go ahead as the whistle sounds via a fg

42-40 EWU of course!

That sounds an awful lot like I think it will play out, and how games like this have gone in the past. My prediction is 45-35, so just change the last TD to a FG and there you go. Well done!
