EWU vs NAU

NAU is going to be a really tough team to beat. They have possibly the best QB in the conference and you can be sure that they're going to test our secondary which has struggled at times. Although I do think that our defensive line will match up well against their O-line and I think we'll get pressure on Herrick. NAU are probably as good (if not better) than Montana at this point in the season, perhaps not as physical as MSU, but definitely better than Weber. They're coming off of a win against SUU, albeit not an entirely convincing one - although SUU is better than their record indicates.

Although we are not quite in "must-win" mode yet, we might as well be. The following games against Sac, PSU, UNC, and SUU will be just as tough, so it will be important to get this win at home. Good news is that we are back at home for this one and after 2 weeks on the road we'll be playing back on the red turf. For that reason alone, I think we can win this one - but it's going to be another battle that will once again come down to who commits fewer turnovers. Our game plan needs to revolve around sustaining long drives as we did against Weber and keeping the ball out of Herrick's hands. And as I said before, we'll need to create some turn-overs. The unknown variable is whether TJ plays or not, but I still don't think it changes our game plan much. I personally do not think he will play, because we don't want him lost for the entire season. If we can win this game without TJ and let him heal up some, it will put us in a much better position down the road for the play-offs, should we found ourselves worthy enough to make them.

God, the conference is weird this year. Had we played against Montana State like we did against Weber, and had Montana State played us like they played against Sac State--- we probably win by 6 TDs. Unbelievable, we can't put more than 7 on the board against MSU and Sac State lights them up for 51 points in ONE HALF !!!

I think we are a much better team for our performance against Weber. It really was our best all-around performance of the year. Both sides of the ball played well, and everyone seemed to play quality football against a decent team. Mitchell found a bit of a groove and the receivers surrounding him did their part. Beaumonte showed he is a great RB and can step up when needed and can probably handle more carries to take the pressure off Taiwan.

And credit goes to the D which really has kept us alive this season.

I'd pick us over a really up-and-down NAU team... I'm not convinced beating SUU in a tight one proves anything. Of course, we're pretty up-and-down too, so it's definitely not a given for either team.

This will be an interesting one. NAU is still a bit of a mystery as they statistically have the best defense in the Big Sky, lost by 19 to ASU, but narrowly escaped SUU. I'm not convinced they've faced a realy quality offense other than the Sun Devils. None the less, they have a senior QB and a very experienced coach in Souers.

Any status reports yet on TJ?

These guys will come in here loaded for REVENGE !!! We stole one in Flagstaff last year, HOWEVER , we were wiped out on the defense , had a big lead and the altitude played a big factor ! If not not for Nichols' magic at the end of the game we don't make the playoffs !!! That being said, I really think we are a better team all around and with or without TJ we will come ready to play !!! Every game from here on in has playoff implications ! GOEAGS !!!!!!!!!! There will be no GIMMIES this year !!! PERIOD!!!!

SUU actually has one of the top offenses in FCS (27th), however we're better (14th). NAU has one of the best defenses not just in the BSC, but nationally in the FCS (8th), compared to EWU's D at 108th. Granted they've played a weak D-II and ISU, whereas every team we've played is ranked fairly high nationally in their offensive production for their respective divisions. If BLM plays like he did against Weber, and TJ plays, coupled with the red turf, I think we win. If BLM plays like he did in every game before Weber, and TJ doesn't play, we lose for sure. I hope the team has maintained that hunger to win and will to stay focused, we're gonna need it.

Greetings Eagles fans,

NAU's playing better right now than they did at the end of last season - particularly on defense. They have more depth up front and fewer serious injuries. Those are the major differences from the Lumberjacks team that ended last season on a 0-4 skid and gave up, what, a 1,000 yards in offense to EWU last November. But the Lumberjacks offense hasn't put up the big #'s seen a few times last season. A slew of brand new (transfer/freshman/young) receivers hasn't resulted in the pass game clicking smoothly yet but I'd still take Herrick as QB more often than not. Freshman Zach Bauman has had a good start at replacing Alex Henderson (Jacks # 2 career rusher) at running back with a few 100 yard games in a row. Lumberjacks special teams were solid in the first three games but faltered a bit in Cedar City, UT last weekend with 2 missed fg's and a missed extra point. Punting and kick/punt return have shown sparks of being special.

Season re-cap:
1. Whooped Western New Mexico (RMAC) ....don't like games like this but understand why they're schedule)
2. Played Arizona State U. tough for 3 quarters + 2 or so minutes into the 4th til the Sundevils ran away at the end. No shame at all in that loss.
3. Dominating road win vs. Idaho State. Much uglier than I expected the final to be.
4. Squeaker of a win on the road vs. Southern Utah U. I agree with EWURanger that the Thunderbirds are better than many think. It took an NAU drive towards the end of the 4th quarter to pull out a 3 point win. Not convincing but a road win's a road win. It's a change of pace from last season to not play a perfect game and still find a way to win in the end. Something to build on for the meat of the Big Sky conference schedule and upcoming road games vs. EWU and U of M.

Taiwan Jones or not, the Eagles will be tough. Hell, it seems the whole of the Big Sky may be tougher than usual this year with any team able to beat any other team on a good night. The fourth road game in a row for the Lumberjacks concerns me, though.

As usual, looking forward to following along Saturday and any insight provided during the coming week.

Any fans on this message board during the game?

Are there any other media options (forums/message boards) or streaming video options.

My predicament is I get to listen to the pre-game radio show before work and then have no internet radio or live radio while at work. Bigskytv.org doesn't work on work computers. :( Internet coverage is available (i.e. gametracker) but that's about it.

It blows but cannot afford to be choosy about work hours in such economic times.

Any in-game banter here would be awesome.

Good News. Spoke with Tiawan Jones today at practice, he stated he will be playing on Saturday. He was stretching etc, deep klnee bends, look great. I said to him, as long as we doesn't run you up the middle. TJ looked at me and smiled, stated, I will run up the middle if I need to. He did participate in practice this today. Also,Anthony Larry DL will be ready for the game on Saturday, he did practice with the team today.
I did confirm from Head Trainer, he stated TJ will play on Saturday.

We have some new Walkons, need to get some names. I know one young man from WSU, last name of Walker, I think he will RS.

I sat close to the OL/DL today while at practice. Being close to those young men, you can really see how big they are. Those are some "Big Dudes". Was hoping no plays would be ran my direction. Brandon Kaufman didn't do much at practice, his shoulders are sore, he said he will be ready Saturday Game, and go get the balls when thrown to him. Go Eags!!!!!Vic Wallace

Welcome mt jack!

There will probably be a few. You can't sneak an earbud into your ear and listen to the online radio feed while at work?

Great news to hear Vic! Thanks for keeping us all informed. :)

Looks like people on most of the message boards aren't giving us much of a chance in this one - especially the Montana and MSU folks. Guess it's a little understandable given our poor performance against MSU.

We can win this one - just gotta take it one game at a time!

It surpsies me that based on being the more accomplished team and playing at home, more people wouldn't pick us. Whatever. I know we look vulnerable until we can prove some consistency, but there isn't much about NAU that's all that frightening. If we play well, we'll win. We have more talent so far as I can see... that's not a knock on NAU, it just is...

I'll probably be on here, as will ranger and ldopapdx...we all live far away from cheney, and are forced to enjoy the games on bigskytv...however i do project it onto a wall in my nerd room, so it's really not all THAT bad...until you go watch another football game on HDTV:)

I will definitely check in here on Saturday during the game.

The work computers don't have speakers or audio capabilities. Ear buds are a no go. I've already tried to beat the system to no avail. :(

Does the Spokesman Review do any decent EWU coverage or is it WSU/UW/Seahawks/Mariners/GU hoops-centric?

"Decent" coverage, yes. But still majorly skewed towards a wretched Washington State team.
