EWU vs Nevada Predictions

So far the predictors have Nevada winning pretty easily. I think EWU's defense will be better than thought and our offense should be pretty darn good. Here are a couple of predictions:

From TSN:
No. 13 Eastern Washington (8-4) at Nevada (8-5), 9:05 p.m.

Series record: Nevada leads, 7-1

What to know: Eastern Washington will debut new quarterback and SMU transfer Bo Levi Mitchell. Mitchell's transition should be eased by running back Taiwan Jones, a Walter Payton Award nominee.

J.C. Sherritt, a Buck Buchanan Award nominee, and the EWU defense will be tasked with stopping a potent Nevada running attack, which led the FBS with an average of 344.9 rushing yards per game.

EWU and Nevada last met in 1991, when both were a member of the Big Sky Conference.

Prediction: Nevada, 42-14

From http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/analysis_bw_wac_nevada.html
9/2 Eastern Washington (FCS) W (-32.13) W (-32.13)

Some other predictions have Nevada winning by more than 40. I'm not sure how much analysis goes into their picks when a FCS school is involved because their final scores are all about the same for FCS vs the Big boys

Heres a post which was posted by someone earlier:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/425707-fcs-vs-fbs-10-games-that-could-go-the-little-guys-way:
September 2nd—Eastern Washington at Nevada

On paper, Nevada appears to be better than the boys from Cheney, but you always have to keep your eyes out for that jaw dropper on the Thursday night opener. This will be a game that the Eagles should stay close in as long as they don't get rattled by the Reno crowd, or dual threat QB Colin Kaepernick.

The Eagles win if

They get a strong defensive outing from their front seven, led by All conference standout J.C. Sherritt. They will also need for whoever QBs the game (either Bo Levi Mitchell, an SMU transfer, or Greg Panelli a JUCO transfer) to not make that big mistake that costs them the game.

I *really* think the Eagles have a chance, but only if they play mistake-free football and keep turnovers to a minimum. The big keys will be getting our OL to play well from the first snap onward, and not allowing Nevada to get many yards after contact. When our defense went to hell at the end of last season, we showed as one of the worst tackling teams ever. Nevada will exploit that easily. The first hit must put their ballcarrier down everytime...

Based on my knowledge of our team, their team, and how these types of games tend to go... I'll give a quarter by quarter prediction:

1st Nevada 14 Eastern 0
Half Nevada 28 Eastern 14
3rd Nevada 38 Eastern 24
End Nevada 52 Eastern 31

I hope I'm wrong, and I hope niether teams takes injuries, but my experience says this is the best educated guess I can make.

I still say there are a couple of factors that will help us out...Nevada won't be ready for the team they have been preparing for, compared to the team they face on the field. I think that gives us an edge early before adjustments are made at half-time. Strong defense will be the key. My prediction:

1st Quarter: EWU - 14 Nevada - 7
2nd Quarter: EWU - 10 Nevada - 7
3rd Quater: EWU - 7 Nevada - 14
4TH Quarter EWU - 10 Nevada - 6

Final: EWU - 41 Nevada - 34

Good to be here Screamin_Eagle174, as a former player under Dick Zornes I've been following the Eagles for a long time and have always wanted to post some thing on the message boards. Here's another prediction from College Football News: ( They do a pretty good job of breaking down matchups )

Eastern Washington (0-0) at Nevada (0-0) Sept. 2, 9:05 pm

Here’s The Deal … When we last saw Nevada, it’s record-setting offense was getting shut down cold in an embarrassing 45-10 Hawaii Bowl loss to SMU. Now the Wolf Pack will be trying to start things up right away on a high note before getting Colorado State, California, and BYU in a span of 14 days. Most of the key parts from the nation’s No. 1 rushing offense are back, but Eastern Washington is a decent Big Sky team with a terrific passing offense and should provide a very scary matchup. This isn’t going to be easy for the Pack.
Why Eastern Washington Might Win: Nevada’s pass defense hasn’t stopped anyone in years. Anyone who could throw the forward pass picked apart the Pac secondary that finished second-to-last in America last year, and it’s going to be a little while before things are appreciably better. EWU finished third in the FCS among passing offenses and was fourth overall, and with former SMU QB Bo Levi Mitchell at the helm, the air show should continue. Consider it a shock of the Eagles don’t come up with at least 300 yards through the air.
Why Nevada Might Win: EWU has a decent run defense, but it’s not going to be special. Linebacker J.C. Sherritt is a special playmaker, but he’s not going to be enough stop a Nevada ground game that should every bit as potent as last year. California ran for 342 yards on the Eagles and the better FCS running teams were able to crank out big yards. If Nevada doesn’t control the game with well over 300 yards on the ground, be shocked.
What To Watch Out For: How sharp will the Nevada ground game be right away? With leading receiver Brandon Wimberly trying to come back from knee problems, and with the receiver depth a bit lacking, it’ll be all ground game, all the time, and the key will be to see how the new parts mix in. QB Colin Kaepernick is the conductor of the show, and Vai Taua is back after finishing eighth in the nation, but Luke Lippincott is gone and Nevada will try out several new options to see who can keep the production rolling.
What Will Happen: EWU’s passing game will provide a whale of a scare, but Nevada will come up with 400 yards on the ground and will pull away late in the third. This will be a fun shootout with a ton of big stats for both sides.
CFN Prediction: Nevada 48 … Eastern Washington 27 … Line: No Line
Must See Rating: Season Premiere: Keeping Up with the Kardashians 5 - Eat, Pray, Love 1 …2

excellent post, and i'll take that score. I don't think we'll lose by more than 4 touchdowns, we'll score in garbage time if anything.

joemon, I remember watching many a game when Zornes was coaching at Columbia Basin CC. I would have put his CBC teams against any 4 year teams around(I bet he would have beat EWU's team at the time). Of course watched him coach at EWU as well. He got the ball rolling for EWU.

Nevada-45
EWU-21

Nevada might put up more if they start to pull away, EWU pulls their first team, and Nevada keeps their first team in. Kind of what happen last year against Cal.

Zornes coached at CBC? They don't even have a football team...

They were the JC national champ in '78. The program feel apart after he left and dissolved in the mid 80s. Clint Didier came from CBC.

Obzerver, still getting used to this blog. I tried posting something using the quick reply but it never posted. Anyway, I was recruited by Dick Zornes at Columbia Basin and what I remember is that Columbia Basins players were much bigger that EWU's. Our biggest guy at the time was 6-6 266, most of our OL was around 6-1 235 pounds. ( The Garske brother were starting at the time and they could hit. ) Columbia probably would have won but EWU had some athletes so it would have been interesting.......ok lets see if this reply shows up

Crazy, I never would've known that. I went there for 2 years via running start in HS.

Just a tidbit...Columbia Basin Football is back...errr...sort of. This is the first year that CBC has offered football in a long time. It is listed as a club team. They just played the number 7 team in the country for JuCo and lost something like 80-6. Lots of kids around the basin are playing. I will look for a roster and link and post it later.

Here is the roster:
