EWU's 2012 recruiting class

Epic recruiting class. I think Hayford will have the Eags in a position to challenge Weber for the top spot in the Big Sky in a couple years. He almost upset Gonzaga in his coaching debut, won his first home game, and has pulled in some big recruits in his short time at EWU, to include Chiverton and Crosgile from the 2011 class. The 2012 class includes one of the top 5 Arizona HS prospects, two players from Germany, and two players from Australia.

Next season we will have three Germans and three Australians on our team.

Good work Eastern!!

Now, put it all together on the court.

Any time a BSC team improves itself, It's a plus for the whole confrence. It sounds like your new coaching staff is working hard to get this done. :thumb:

I'm not trying to be a jerk but you said 2 players from Germany twice. Do you mean 2 from Australia and 2 from Germany? Like I said, I'm genuinely interested, not trying to be the error finder.

Nice looking class. Three forwards, a center, and a guard.

One thing you need to worry about is the foreign bigs. Weber has tried this approach before, with mixed results. Stephan Bachman and Slobodan Ocokolich (transferred from Ohio State) both ended up being part of one of the best teams in Weber State/Big Sky history. However, at the same time Weber has brought in four other foreign bigs in the last decade who never really saw any PT (Ivan Gatto, Niparavic, Danko, Thurig). Foreign bigs aren't as prepared for the American style of play, which is far more physical than in Europe or Australia. Down at SUU Roger Reid has tried to infuse foreign talent into his suffering program in the hope that it would act as the catalyst towards rebuilding SUU's program quicker; he has used mostly Australian players. For the most part, this experiment has failed. His guys, from what I have observed, have had a hard time meshing and handling the Physical nature of the American game. However, we all know that talented and quality foreign players, do, from time to time, find nice homes at mid-major schools. Saint Mary's is a great example of using foreign players to boost their program.

I like Hayford, and I know that he will turn Eastern around (pretty quickly too; I think Eastern is better than UM), but I'm really skeptical of foreign bigs. Powell and Hill (the Aussie PG) look like they are good additions. Hill will probably need a redshirt, which won't be bad for him, and is defintely possible, especially with the number of guards playing at Eastern right now. Also, Crosgile should be a nice addition to the Eagles depth, as well as the other German big Sieferth (why are they leaving their programs).

Coach Rahe said something really interesting at the last Wildcat Club Coaches luncheon. He said that, on paper, our 2012 recruiting class is something special. However, until they play with the other members of the team and have a chance to really participate in practice he doesn't know how good they will be or if they will even make it. He recruits on the hope that the guys are physical, great character kids, hard-working, and have the potential to develop into great players. Talent doesn't always = automatic or guaranteed success though. Look at Vaughn Autry at UM or Walker III at USU. Neither are playing and one is in jail, after being billed as being the next greats at their respective schools.

No matter, I'm glad that Hayford is having success. I want all Big Sky schools to succeed. Chiverton, is the real deal. Hard to imagine nobody else wanted him. Hayford definitely found a gem. Finally, one thing Eastern fans need to realize is that Earlywine wasn't a bad recruiter. He is a solid assistant coach, but a poor head coach. He can find talent, but isn't very successful at getting that talent to mesh. He left Hayford a lot of talented players.

Yeah, sorry. It should have read two from Germany and two from Australia.

Yep, agreed on all points. We've actually had a few Australian players before (no Germans that I can remember)......but the two Aussies I can remember were pretty solid players for us.

Earlywine did bring some quality players to EWU. I think he was a really good recruiter, if not a great HC. I do think Hayford will benefit from Earlywine's recruits this season.

Also agree on Chiverton. He is averaging 25ppg through two games. Will be interesting to see if he can keep that pace. He had foot surgery over the summer, and he's quoted as saying he's only about 85% right now. Should be interesting to see what he can do.

I'm sold that E. Wash is the 2nd best team in the Big Sky this year. I knew they'd probably be in the 2-4 range but I wasn't expecting them to be this solid. Montana lost a lot in losing Qvale and like I've always said Selvig is way too soft to lead his team. It'll be a dogfight for the Weber, Montana and E. Wash this season.

I won't go as far as to say EWU will be the second best team in the BSC this year. It's way too early to say and I don't think we really know what we've got yet. I think we will compete. Last night we had a really disappointing loss to Oregon in which we led most of the game but then couldn't make FT's down the stretch and had 4 players foul out of the game. We have to start winning some of those games if we're going to be in the discussion of being a good Big Sky team because no one is into moral victories, even against ranked teams like Gonzaga or Pac-12 teams that we aren't favored to beat. You can't go into a place like Oregon and piss away a 9 point lead in the second half, not convert multiple FT attempts, and have half your team foul out and expect to win.

I'm not really sold on Montana, either. A one point win over Sioux Falls doesn't really impress me. I think they have a couple players injured, so we'll see what they can do with a healthy team down the stretch.

I have a feeling Montana will be pretty flippy floppy, they played really poorly against GFs, but they played pretty well vs Idaho last night.

So im thinking its gonna be a which Montana team shows up season for the Griz. They have the talent to be really good though.

Still really early though.
