Exhibition #2 (Colorado Christian)

Colorado Christian comes to town on Sat. This is what we can expect. They had a 21-13 record last season, going 12-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, DII same as the UCCS Lions. They are led by a 6-11 guy who averaged 15.9 pts and 6.5 rebounds a game as a JR. He also had 79 blocks on the year. Also, there is a 6-7 Sophmore who, as a freshman, averaged 10.9 pts a game. He also shot 37% from the 3pt line last year. The game will be Colorado Christians first of the season.

During the course of their weekly phone call late on Saturday night, my parents mentioned that they attended Weber's second exhibition game. My mom said that the team looks good this year. My dad said that they're going to get destroyed by Utah State next week. So, for those of you who have seen the first two games so far, who is right? Pick a side: Mom or Dad.

Neither....the team didn't look good last night after being unconscious the first game and the USU game is probably up for grabs as Utah State has some pretty big holes to fill and that game is always close.

I know that Rahe has brought in some great speed and athleticism that should serve us well in conference. But I hate being disappointed in both Panos and Morris again. Every time we face a decent center they struggle so badly. I won't take too much away from Colorado's center as he was really much better than would be expected, but he scores, what, 22 points on us, and worse, ends the game with 2 fouls while our centers gather 8 trying to stop him. We have got to have a decent inside game to win consistently. Colorado kept the game close because we had no inside game in the first half and they could agressively guard the perimeter. In the second half we played better defense and got some scoring from Lilliard and Sessions on some drives to the hoop, but Panos and Morris have got to get the ball inside and score or draw fouls.

USU will try to score inside with Wesley and their new post guy and we have to respond with better play from two guys who have been at WSU long enough to be more consistent......

If we struggle inside against USU the game could be similar to the MSU game in the semifinal except in that game we couldn't hit anything from outside. If we are hitting 3's vs USU that will take some pressure off our guys in the paint.

Our bigs will have their hands full with Wesley and Bendall. Wesley is a foul trouble guy so we need to get him fouling early. He had a triple-double against us last year in Logan.

Regarding the CCU game there was a big difference with playing a DII with a huge big man and one thats pretty good. Usually their bigs at these schools are worse than average 6'7" guys. So seeing a 7 footer that could run and chew gun at the same time at a DII was surprising.

But remember we should have lost to a DII in fort lewis 2 yrs ago and pulled out the win in OT, then our first season game was USU and we beat them. I think Jaycee Carroll as a senior was a little better than fort lewis. Just like I don't think its any indication about ISU after beating UCCS in OT.

Neither exhib game gives me any forecast about what will happen vs USU.
As well same with USU's 2 exhibition games against DII's.

Another thing to consider is in a real game we'd only have 8-9 guys even get in the game where as in th CCU game we had 11 playing. These were practice games.

I attended the game last night and will say that I was most impressed by the athleticism of Session. He's an exciting player to watch.

On a side note, what the crap was that song at the start of the game? BRING BACK JOKER AND THE THIEF!!
Who do we need to call or email to get this done?
WE MUST HAVE JOKER AND THE THIEF for Utah state.

All,

Please contact Joe Strand. I'm sure he would have no problem playing the Joker and Thief. He might not be aware of its popularity from last season.

I'm just wondering....what song did they play?

A few years ago they used to play Audioslave's "Cochise." That wasn't too bad.

Utahpride- Clearly you dont know much about basketball. Colorado Christian's main defensive scheme was called "pack". This means they "pack" the paint to limit post touches. Why do you think Nick was able to shoot 6/11 beyond the arc...? Same goes for the UCCs game. The posts haven't been involved as much because these smaller teams have to play like that. So take what you want from exhibition games that dont even count and be disappointed in the team you are a so called fan for.....

Panos had 17 points and 8 rebounds last year in Logan against Utah State. He is a senior this year and will lead the big men. I am wondering if anyone is aware or has heard a status update on Matt Washington being 100% yet. We heard a lot of good things about this youngster last year but we haven't seen much playing time from him as of yet. Also, what about Darin Mahoney? He did get in the game yesterday. The team has more depth and experience at the power forward and center this year than last.

Interesting observations, you have a good knowledge of the game. Any forecasting on what I might expect from Utah State defensively as compared to what we saw against UCCS and CCU?

Weber played a good DII last night who had a good game plan for playing the Cats. What I liked about them was their toughness, tenacity, and ball control. Every single player on the floor could shoot the 3 and they have some height. I think Weber would love to have that 6-11 kid. How did he ever end up at a DII?
Great observation on the "pack" defense. Smaller teams with great outside shooters usually employ that defense as a means of limiting a teams inside game. Last night Weber had a hard time shooting from outside, it was nice to see the Cats have to struggle a bit to win. Honestly, did anyone think that Weber would lose? I was disappointed during the first half when Weber lost focus on the defensive end and sat around the arc settling for 3pt shots rather than trying to work it in or penetrate.

Washington and Mahoney should be ready to go by Friday. Washington is really quick, its too bad he had to defend a guy who was running all over the court. If he was 100% he would have been fine. the Coaches didn't want to put that much pressure on his achilles. Did anyone else see how quick he was? He has great hands... Mahoney, is a fighter. The guy never quits. He was jumping on the floor, playing tough hard D, and was moving pretty well for not being 100% yet. It'll be good to have both of these guys.

Jimmy D...as you know, I am fairly familiar with your parents and their outlooks. I'd go with Mamma Brady over Blake on this one. That was a really good DII team last night, and thats exaclty was the game was designed to be, tough.

The 6' 11" Center for Colorado Christian transfered from Texas State according to the standard Ex. That was a great preseason game approaching this Friday that they really needed. Washington looked really quick and I think will be playing much bigger than his 6'7" frame. Bring on the Saggie Aggies.

Shooting 41% (9-22) from downtown isn't having a hard time...then again if you just mean compared to the game before then yes it was horrible shooting from the arc lol!!!
