Exhibition: Black Hills State University

I really didn't know anything about this team, so I looked them up. They are a NCAA DII program and are fairly established. They have a young team this year, with only 1 senior and three juniors. They are not small. They have 4 or 5 guys 6'7'' to 6'11''. Their guards and wings are the same size as ours. Of course they are DII, so play on the same level as Dixie or Westminster.

This should be one of the better exhibition games we have had in a while. Maybe better than a couple of the other lower level teams we play in games that actually count. I think that fans will not want to miss this one.

Winning should not be an issue, but winning by some outrageous score may be a lot harder to do. This is a team that could make any team look bad. It looks to me like a team who could win a game or two in the BSC. :coffee:

It's funny, usually about this time college hoops is all everyone is talking about around here.

This year however the only game on Saturday I can think about is our football game against NAU. How strange is that???

Knowing that this Black Hills State team is better than our season and home-opener competition of Antelope Valley Whatever, next week isn't really do much to build excitement for the season. However, I think once the Wizard and his team get a crack at an actual DI against Pepperdine on the 15, emotions will change for the Wildcat faithful.

Regardless, Wildcat you are right. Being excited about football in November is definitely unusual for Wildcat fans. I'm just happy that we get to watch football and then automatically head over to the Dee and watch basketball. Isn't that the epitome of joy?! Watching our Wildcats?

I'm excited to see our guys play against someone other than each other. The purple and white was fun and all, but it is far more exciting seeing the guys actually play against someone other than each other. And, from the sound of things, Black Hills will actually challenge the Cats a bit. Which is what they need. This also gives the entire team a chance to play. Love these games. Everyone should get some mins, even potential red shirts (compliance, that's right, right? Red Shirts can play in exhibitions?).

I think that potential red shirts can play in exhibition games. However, I wouldn't expect to see much of them. I think that the coaches tend to look at these games as preparation for their 10 or 11 deep rotation. The starters may get significantly less time, and the bench more, but that is about it. What we may see, that we wouldn't in a regular DI game, is more time for the 9th, 10th, or 11th guy off the bench. I'm not saying that we will not see some play from potential red shirting players, just that it would be quite limited. :coffee:

Black Hills predicted to finish 10th in a D2 league...should be a blowout from the get go

Even 10th in a D2 league is better than some NAIA queef we played and destroyed last year, to open this season. Saturday's game should be better than next weeks season opening game against Antelope. :ohno:

Believe me, I am not saying that these guys are world champions. I'm just saying that they are an established DII team, on the rise, and with the size to match up well. They have a couple of transfers who can help and they have recruited some size and skill players. Yes, they are a DII program, and Yes, they are not picked to win their league. However, they have a coach, 3rd year, who is working hard to build something there. This is a team who could win one or two BSC games. I don't expect any 60 point blowout here.

There is no doubt that we will have the superior athletes. We should win easily. I just expect that it will be closer than many might expect. This will be one of the better exhibition games. Probably a better game than the Baptist School of Treading Water or Antelope's Death Valley of Despair. :coffee:

Weber should win by 35-40....they are a step up from playing the little sisters of the poor....nobody that averaged double figures returns from last years team that had a losing record

I would go along with 35-40 if we are able to maintain intense D for the whole game. I know they have been working on just that. I just don't know if they are 11 deep with that mindset right now. Scoring should not be an issue. From what I have seen, the intensity on D is good for the first 8 players. After that, there are a lot of errors and there needs to be way more intensity. I think it will come along fine for later in the season. Most D! players were never tasked with playing intense D while they were in HS or AAU ball. It is the thing that usually needs the most work. :coffee:

Anyone else wonder why "the scout" has so much information on Black Hills State.

There's this crazy new thing called the internet lol

Weber bench should be able to extend lead against these guys.. nothing wrong with playing a bad team to get the bench in a game and work out kinks.

To me, one of two things must happen to make this sort of game useful. Either our opponent will need to make us work hard or our own guys would have to find a way to play hard in the face of a weak opponent. Many of our past teams have not had the killer instinct to play with intensity in the face of a weak opponent. I hope this team has a little of it. We will see. If they don't force us to show the intensity and we can't bring it otherwise, the game could be a waste of time. IMO :twocents:

My feelings are that this was a good exhibition game. BHSU fought hard the whole game and managed to stay with us for about 10 minutes. Their offense reminded me of Eastern Washington's. We obviously out manned them, but they played in our faces the whole night. They made us work for what we got.

It was good to see everyone play and most everyone played well after that first 10 minutes of the game. We came out a little nervous. That was to be expected. The really good part is that we were forced to work through it and fight a little harder.

I am still of the opinion that BHSU could win a few BSC games. :coffee:

Speaks to how bad the conference is.

I didn't attend the game but looking at the box score it shows Stavrev with 1 rebound in 0 minutes. That must be an error, right?

Good to see Gittens already playing.

Do you think those will be the starters to begin the season, Hill, Braxton, John, Cannon, & Senglin?

I went to the exhibition last night and here are a few observations.

First, no Juwan Williams. He wasn't even in warmups. I wonder what's going on there. He didn't suit up for the closed scrimmage against Arizona State either. Brekkott Chapman was also nowhere to be found. I know he's ineligible this year, and wasn't sure if he'd play tonight, since exhibitions don't count against eligibility, but he wasn't even in the building. I found that to be a little odd that he wasn't even on the bench.

As for the actual game, it was obvious that we are sorely going to miss Joel this year. That being said, Zach Braxton looked more aggressive in the paint than we saw from him last year, so there is hope. Dallas was like a baby deer out there, and didn't look terribly comfortable, but made some nice defensive plays. His shooting touch actually looks better than Bolomboy's did when he was a freshman.

Harding didn't get many minutes, but I was VERY impressed with how he looked in those minutes. He is crazy fast and has a fluid shot. He had one nasty ankle-breaker on a BHS defender that he finished with a wise layup. This kid is going to be special.

Gittens played, which is encouraging. I was under the impression his foot injury was going to sideline him for at least a few games. However, he did normal Gittens things, making terrible decisions with bad passes and ill-advised tear-drop floaters that rimmed out. He did knock down a couple of open threes, though.

Not much else to report from our usual suspects, though. Senglin, Hill, Cannon, John, Richardson and Baker were all there and looked good. Baker did look a little on the thin side (compared to last year).

Stavrev did not play. If he got a rebound, it came to him on the bench.

As for the starters, John has earned the start at 3 for now. However, things are so close at that position, I think we might see changes there from game to game. Dusty started at 3 in the second half. However, that may have been due to John having three fouls.

Last I saw Brekkott, he was on crutches with some sort of a knee injury. That may be why he wasn't there. Williams has also had some sort of injury.

Darling and our new walk on, Butler, did not play as well. :coffee:

My understanding is that he hurt his ankle in practice.
When I saw him on the crutches, I asked if it was the ankle injury that happened earlier and was told that it was something else. However, that could mean anything. It could be a sprain to the other ankle. At any rate, nobody seemed too concerned about it, even Brekkott himself.

As far as I know Williams' situation is a longer term, nagging sort of injury. I am unsure what the status of that might be. If he needs extended rest, a red shirt year might be recommended. Although, I am not sure if any red shirt decisions have been made yet.
