Exhibition Opener

Tomorrow the season starts with an exhibition game against Holy Names. I have been looking forward to this season starting since last season ended. I think this will be Sac St.'s best year of Div I basketball ever. My guess for starting line-up is the same as I predicted last spring: guards are easy, Garrity and McKinney, the best backcourt in the BSC....the wing will be Demps, our best defender and I hope an improved offensive game, at PF I think the starter will be Hornsby, got a knack for being where the ball is and also an improved outside shooter, and the center will be E. Stuteville, though only a sophmore may be the best true center in the BSC, but if not he is definitely in the top 3. The first big off the bench will be Mills or Tiffin depending on whether the sub is for Eric or Nick. First guard will be Barlett who can shoot the 3 ball as well as anyone on the team. I hope the freshmen get to play with some of the first unit as that experience can be invaluable later in the season. Strings and Graves will probably get a little more time than M. Stuteville, Harrick, or Ubaja right now but they definitely have the talent to change that quickly. Anyone else have any ideas?? Can't wait for tomorrow.

Overall it was a decent first outing. The lineup I predicted was correct as were the first subs at guard and forward. The biggest difference I felt was the confidence level of E. Stuteville and the other starters. Granted, Sac had a distinct height advantage but Eric really showed some patience and good inside moves that I didn't see last year. The freshmen showed a lot of talent in the limited time they had to play. Strings especially looked the most ready to contribute immediately. Graves didn't look like a nervous freshman either. Demps played his usual good man to man and he added some good offense as well. If he can give us 10 to 14 pts per with about 5 or 6 boards (which I believe he can do) it would be huge. They tried quite a few different looks on both offense and defense. I'm as excited about the coming season now as I was before this game. A 20 win season is more than possible.

The Hornets played real well the first half and in the second half Katz let everyone play quite a bit. I felt it was a good time to get the newbies some time. The biggest surprise is the way Tiffin has played both exhibitions. He is playing offense with confidence....unlike at any time last year. He is also shooting free throws with a different technique and much more effectively. E. Stuteville is as good as we expected but I think he will get much better. Cody Demps is his usual defensive stopper and he too looks much more confident on offense. No complaints here. Packing right now and leaving for Spokane in the morning. Don't have high hopes other than the guys play hard and stay within 10 of Gonzaga. I think that would be a major victory against a team as highly rated as Gonzaga on the road.
