Ragged, ragged, ragged.......46 fouls called in the game. Western Oregon got too many buckets off the dribble. It may have been a good idea to go to a zone. Lots of players in combinations that were new...a game much like last year's when PSU won by 10. Lots of players in early foul trouble.

Those fouls converted by WOU at 88%; we shot a measly 60% We'll lose a lot of games at that rate. Bound to be messy - first game with many new players. Murrell no doubt wanted to see how different combinations worked. Jones and VanBrocklin split the time at point, and they did almost exactly the same job - 10 points, 6-7 assists. Main difference V shot .33 from the field, J shot her usual .50. And V took down an impressive 9 rebounds, while J got only 4. I'd say we have two competent point guards this year. The core, Bishop, Valentine and Marchant, provided most of the scoring. McFadden proved she could shoot (3-4 from the field), ditto Brock (1-2) in the few minutes those freshmen had. But lots of work to do.

I hate the first game for the ref's they call it way too tight on ticky tacks and miss the major obvious fouls; no rhythm, no play running but lots of interesting combo's, Jackson is supposedly back-up to Jones, vanBrock is more of a 2 supposedly; regardless it can't hurt to have lots of ball handlers....we'll see how things smooth out. Like all the fastbreak points, don't like all the near misses. Jitters and excitement. Looking forward to an exciting season. One interesting stat, only 11 3's put up. Now that's new for this team....

The exhibition game revealed team weaknesses while allowing the victory. Looks like Murrell has has a job on her hands. I have faith she'll get the unit humming.

The consensus that I heard from tonight was that the ladies need some work.

Consensus = A lot of folks that were at the game on Thursday.

first games are always rough around the edges. I am guessing not all worked hard during off season, they will show it now; hopefully they will settle down and put the work in now, it's early

Skimming through the Western Oregon game stats, Van Brocklin really stands out. She played 27 minutes, during which time she put in 10 points and handed out 7 assists. And somehow, at 5'7", pulled down 9 rebounds! This is one impressive transfer! Looks like we're fixed for the year at point with her backing up Jones. Don't know how I missed her first time through the stats.

sounds like Jackson may back up Jones but it also sounds like there are a lot of possiblities, not a bad problem to have!
Good luck ladies and have fun!

PDX: Gonzaga beat W Oregon 115-51 today. After watching the PSU/WO game and the team scrimmage, I have real concerns about this team.
