Since this is the first post on last nights game, I'm guessing that fan interest in Weber State Basketball isn't necessarily high. And frankly, after suffering through that game, I totally understand. The product and atmosphere is stale.

1. NCAA refs are destroying college basketball. It was a Mother Fing exhibition game. Swallow your whistle! 47 fouls is a bit ridiculous.
2. We are definitely not a team. I don't know what Randy has assembled, but team is not what I'd call the Wildcats. I saw a bunch of individuals wearing Wildcat jerseys, but not a team.
3. NO GLU guy or outside shooting. The onus on hitting 3's is high for this offensive scheme, but the Cats aren't necessarily good shooters. I really hope I'm wrong, but the Cats missed over 10 wide open 3's last night, and after reading the box for the BSU game...looking more and more likely that this team will be in the low .300%. Regrettably, if Randy is depending on John to become "the" shooter, then it really is going to be a loooooooonnnnnggg year. Leadership is huge and you can tell it is absent on the floor and bench. Glu guys are necessary and needed and the Cats just don't have one. They are important for doing the intangibles.
4. I'm glad we are super talented, but the guys aren't basketball players. Fundamentally this team is not sound (assistants have a lot to do with this). 5 years and I'm still waiting for Braxton to execute a fake and follow that with an up and under, or a pivot. Brekkot is a bit out of control and seems like more of a liability than an asset.
5. REBOUNDING!! On offense no one is attacking the rim and giving the team additional scoring chances. There was a lot of standing around.
6. Fast Break Points: 0. With a "running" offense I thought that number would be huge every game.
7. Music -- Embarrassing and awful. JAKE -- Needs to be retired. Promotionals -- really weird and screwy (this might be the high point). Game atmsophere -- out of 10 a 1.

Very accurate analysis, especially on numbers 2-5. The coaches are valuing driving over shooting, and refuse to have anyone rebound on the offensive glass. With today's modern basketball game, it is imperative that the team have shooters and rebounders. Instead, everyone gives a head fake and then drives to the middle, whether defender goes for the fake or not. And don't tell us we are overreacting, because I for one have watched a lot of basketball and this is not a great product, and not a lot of expectation that it will be. Good shooters aren't valued in this current system.

Everyone knows my feelings about basketball at Weber State. Rahe needs to leave, and thats the root of this travesty. Yes, its early and we are yet to play a game, but if 12 years in any indication, we are in for a looong year. Heck, I have heard Rahe say things with 4 returning starters after a December game of, "well, they are still trying to learn our system." On 1280 Rahe was telling they how everyone is learning the system, including the coaches. Honestly, last night was like watching church ball, when you have 5 guys on the floor who all think they are Jordan. Jake needs to be tossed. I have no desire to listen to him babble the same lines game, after game, after game.... He and Rahe should but go job searching elsewhere. Speaking of 1280 interview, one of the guys brought up the fact that Dame has had tremendous success, and was found my the pros even without making "the dance." Rahe just says, "yeah.' hahaha

Well, I guess I'm going a different route. The book Moneyball unveiled what was going on in baseball to try and get even the slightest advantage over an opponent. Great movie a couple of years ago brought to the forefront for most fans what I had read about many years earlier. Now the big deal is defensive shifting -- again an effort to get the slightest advantage over your opponent by looking at computer trends on where players not only typically hit a ball, but also dictated by where the pitcher is going to throw the ball and what pitches he is going to use.

Now, I'm not an NBA fan. I love college basketball. But if you watch an NBA game, sabermetrics have taken it over as well. And those metrics now dictate in the NBA that you either shoot 3's or you try to make layups. And you better have a deep bench because it is fast-paced and requires 10 or 11 players to win. That is the NBA game. That is what I saw Weber attempting to do last night.

Under Rahe the Wildcats have done two things pretty consistently well. We tend to shoot a high percentage from 3-pt and we're usually a pretty good FT-shooting team. This new offense plays to those strengths. The mid range jump shot is a thing of the past. You didn't see it last night at all. And you won't see the Jazz shooting them very often either. You try to get to the basket, make the layup, dish to a guy set up on the wing for a 3-pt shot, or get fouled. This offense was built for a guy like Harding.

Do I like it? Probably not. Do I accept it. Things change and sometimes you've got to go with the flow. The team I saw was kind of frantic on both ends of the court. They were really pushing hard. They seemed caffeinated to the max! I believe they will settle into the game a little as they play more and get used to both the pace and the rotations. Things seemed to flow a little better the last 10 minutes of the second half. But to that point they were the cardiac kids.

To succeed at this a couple of things have to happen. They have to shoot the ball a heck of a lot better. Too many guys were forcing too hard on the inside, just banging up against the wall. They will have to hit 3's. They looked really bad at it last night. They have to rebound -- and we need to grab more offensive boards with this offense. At such a fast pace, they have to control the ball a whole lot better. Turnovers will kill them!!! And this is a turnover type of offense. They're going to have to stay calm while running at a furious pace. A lot has to happen to look better. I think it may take awhile.

A couple of comments on players. Man I just wait and wait for Chapman to be the guy I think he can be. I think so much rides on him. He was a little blah again last night, though I thought he hit the boards well. Harding just didn't have it, pretty rare and I expect him to really be good. His FG% had to be really bad in that game. Geez, where did we get this Zdor kid from? I'm not used to seeing a 6'10" freshman at Weber State who is so active and coordinated. I adore Zdor! Nero had a nice second half and seems sneaky quick. Barnes seemed nervous, but he also settled a little in the second half. Hit good % of 3's. High FG%. Deep Bench. That's the offense recipe. Hope we don't burn the soufflé.
.
Sorry this is so long. Going to be interesting. Fasten your seatbelts!
