At the request of several avid posters, now that Shane has signed his LOI, is enrolled in school, and attending classes, I will post a little on him and give my impressions on his recruitment and on the new staff. He has a great high school pedigree, but realizes that means nothing now, particularly after serving a mission and being out of the game for a couple of years. He served a mission in Argentina, and came home weighing 219 lbs. (down from a high weight of 260 in high school) He had me give him a protien shake right after I hugged him in the airport, and we had a steak on the way home, and a work out before he was released later in the day. Shane is a gym rat, loves lifting wieghts, and has desires of being a collegiate strength coach after his graduation. He hit school at 253 lbs, and from what he has reported, loves the intensity of the weight room. He also is impressed with the fact that the coaches are there, and at study hall. He wants to be a 260 lb. D-end, but the coaches, and his dad, think that he will grow into a 300+ lb, D or O Tackle. He is also an honor graduate and scored 26 on his act. He is really excited that he took concurrent Trig and pre-calc in high school and doesn't have to take math now.
Coach Mac sold him on Weber State over several D-1 institutions, and promised him that when he returned home he would have his scholarship. Coach Mac, Coach Swan, and Coach Eck sold the entire family on Weber. It was a great day when he signed. We were nervous when Coach Mac retired, knowing that Shane would have to get a new letter from a new coach.
I've known Coach Smith from his Idaho and Utah State days. i explained to Shane that he was a very intense coach, one who like Coach Mac, loves his players, and would do anything for them, but also a Coach who would make sure that there was accountability and responsibililty on the part of his players. I also told him that I have seen him take apart referees and players who weren't performing to his expectations.
Shane had a great interview with Coach Smith and most of his new staff. Coach Smith has resold our family on Weber State. We have had the oppurtunity to visit with him several times. I think he is the Coach to continue the traditions started with Coach Mac, and take Weber to the next level. What a great conference we play in. Eastern Washington and Montana are national champions, other schools are stepping up, as is Weber, and I fully expect that if Shane works his ass off, he will have his oppurtunity to reach his personal potential, as a student and football player, and win a national championship at Weber.
What else could a father hope for his son?
