Fall 2014 enrollment: 13,453

I believe this is a record enrollment. Is it because Eastern has such outstanding courses of study students are clamoring to get here, or because WSU and UW are at capacity?

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I believe WSU is struggling a little bit to get quality applicants... which is something new for them.

Eastern has done great outreach to the Hispanic community and has long been the #1 university in Washington for first-generation college students. With the ever-expanding Latino immigrant population in Washington, that outreach is paying nice dividends.

Also set the record for students living on campus, I think it was 2,100. That of course was because they made it mandatory for incoming freshman to live in the dorms the first year (with some exceptions)

Are you implying Eastern has lower standards for entry? Not intending to knock Eastern just trying to understand the growth.

EWU traditionally has lowered standards for entry compared to WSU and UW. All my friends in high school that had problems getting into WSU/UW suddenly showed up at EWU :)

I think by 2015 Eastern will be over 15 thousand students. one of the big reasons enrollment has gone up so much over the past few years is that every other university in the state has increased their tuition while Eastern has not.

WUT

Fall Quarter 2006
1000 RES UNDERGRAD TUITION
$1,426.00
Price/credit (12 credit units) = $118/credit

Spring Quarter 2010
1000 RES UNDERGRAD TUITION (12 credit units)
$1,780.00 = $148/credit

Taking a SINGLE 4 credit class:
Spring Quarter 2013
1000 RES UNDERGRAD TUITION
$982.92 = $245.73

What year did it not go up!?! They have increased tuition by the legally allowed 11% 6 of the last 7 years, and the one year they did not increase tuition (2011 or 2012) was because they were not allowed to increase tuition 7 years in a row.

His assertion was incorrect, but it is true that Eastern has not increased tuition at the rate other schools in the state have. There are several other reason enrollment is up, to include an increased on campus student living experience as well as higher retention rates across the board.

I can agree to that. I just get riled up on this topic easily.

Interestingly, Eastern's curriculum is rated as one of the highest in the state by ACTA. One thing it seems they need to work on, however, is graduation %, as that is one of the lowest in the state. I will echo the sentiments about tuition, Eastern has done a good job of keeping that relatively in check while it seems to have risen considerably everywhere else in the state. I really think that's only one key part of it, though, as Eastern seems to have made considerably gains in other areas. I agree they need to be thinking about being at around 15k (or more) students over the next 5 years or so.

FWIW, this all ties in to athletics, IMO...I really think increasing enrollment every year is a key component to growing the football program and our other athletics programs. I mean, there's a huge difference between now and 10 years ago.

That's not what I was suggesting. Although I do think Eastern has lower standards than Pac-12 schools, which are usually considered pretty high for state schools. I was noting that Eastern has taken an approach of marketing to kids who aren't otherwise delivered a message... and that has worked out well.

EWU has done a tremendous job of reaching out to 1st generation students, who traditionally will have lower GPA's going out of high school. This is not a bad thing, but it does skew the numbers. The professors all know that the kids that walk through the halls are not the top 10 or even 20% of students out of the high schools, this creates problems in the sense of how "tough" should the education be, the individual colleges tend to make that decision.

Another huge problem is graduation rate as posted above, when you are getting the "middle pack" students, and when you are being pressed by the deans to up graduation rates, quality of education suffers. I have watched this in the accounting program that I was so proud of just 5 years ago as some of the old gatekeepers have retired and the program has succumbed to the pressures brought by the School of Business. It is indeed a problem, but it's also a good thing for the reasons in paragraph one, bringing education to those that otherwise do not have a chance!

Are you saying that my 1989 accounting degree was more rigorous than today? I was told there is no Easy Andy on the CPA exam!!!

Combination of factors including value, marketing, tremendous improvements to campus and campus life, football success, increased exposure, etc. One thing is for certain is that it means increased revenue for athletics based on mandatory student fees/institutional support. Every additional Eag is a few hundred dollars extra in the athletic departments coffers.
