Forgot to post this earlier, but I was talking to a guy from Katy, TX today over the phone, and I asked him if he followed football much (I know, stupid question... it's TEXAS). Of course he did, and he had become an EWU fan following Bo Levi's progress at Eastern, and continues to follow the program from afar. Anyways, thought it was a neat little story to share. :)

I was on a flight to Atlanta yesterday largely populated by Auburn and Florida State people flying back from the game. I was sitting in a row with an Auburn guy to my left, and two Auburn guys to my right, and two FSU people behind me.

A college age chick walked past us in an Eagle sweatshirt and they all got to talking about how that's the red turf team, and that they're a damn fine team up here... And would beat the hell out of Georgia Southern. It was 100% brand recognition from people in a totally different part of the country. I let them in on the factI was an EWU guy too....

LDopa..you should have informed the FSU guys this:

on video doing a tomahawk chop to mock opponent Elizabeth Warren’s claims of Native American ancestry. Where does the tomahawk chop come from?

Probably Florida. Florida State University adopted the Seminole as its symbol in 1947, and early depictions were of a Native American holding a tomahawk, the type of hatchet used by Colonial-era Native Americans and white colonists. It’s not clear exactly when Florida State fans began doing the tomahawk chop—a rhythmic extension and contraction of the forearm, with the palm open, to mimic the action of chopping—but a former FSU president once claimed that it was invented by the FSU marching band in the early 1980s. (Until 1972, the university used “Seminole Sammy,” a white student clad in fake Native American garb, as its mascot.)
After an indepth investigation it was found to have originated At Eastern Washington University back in 1956 when the schools mascot was The Savages. In 1973 the school changed their mascot to the Eagles and the "chop" was dropped.

My HS mascot was the Braves, and they also did the Tamahawk Chop during games.

Very cool. You should send that over in a quick email to Chaves. I'm sure the front office loves hearing anecdotes like this one about how the brand is doing.

I had a similar experience recently.....didn't think to post it.

I was playing craps at a table with a bunch of middle-aged Auburn fans the Saturday before the BCS title game. They were staying in Vegas for a few days before heading to the game. After discussion about the title game, they asked me who my team was. I replied with, "It's an FCS school......Eastern Washington."

"Oh yeah, we know Eastern Washington. Very fine team you have up there." -Auburn guys.

Pretty cool.

Moral of the story is, make an effort to wear some Eagle gear whenever in public. I'll be flying to Vegas tomorrow and wearing an Eagle shirt or jacket. I will definitely get a few "go Eags", and driving over to Flag on Thur for the bball game. The guy is red on Big Sky TV Thursday will be me

My husband often wears Eag gear and it is fun and surprising to see who and under what circumstances you meet ... We've had talks with Illinois State fans, coaches' family members at the Puyallup fair, out of state encounters similar to those described here. The football program and success has definitely raised the school's profile and fortunately the President gets it. Here's to hoping the BOR also recognizes the impact and gets behind the Gateway project.

HannaO,
We had lunch with the President of the University yesterday from noon to 1:30pm, prior to the start of the MBB Game, of which we defeated MSU 69-64. While there I spoke with a very high named individual, who mentioned to me that we are getting to where we want to be to get the Gateway Project going, just a few loose ends that needs to be connected. He said they are working very hard behind the scenes. I told him I hope that we can get it started before I leave this world, when I mentioned I will be a young 80 on Sept 9th, he smiled. Here is hoping it get started very soon. I must say I have seen approximately 7 Presidents for Eastern, in my time affiliated with EWU, Working and Retired, he is the "BEST" and is behind our University and their Programs. Him and his wife always greet individuals at the festivities at the University. I met two of our Recruits last night at the MBB Game, they are so glad that they decided to become part of our Great Family. The rest of them stayed in the locker Room, and watched the Hawks. One Recruit was with Steve Forgette, and Ashton Miller, both OL Players, his name I did not get. Hoping things went well for your family at Christmas and New Year. Give the family our best/Go eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Good point on the University President. I agree completely, he is the best we've ever had in Cheney... and BY FAR the best since George Frederickson left.
