farewell 2009-10

So the season's over. We finished about where the coaches put us at the beginning - 4th or 5th in conference, if you figure we got up to the semis. Realistically we did about what you could expect, with a new coach and without Dominguez and without a center (pace Jamie). In college you can't just go out and by a center, the way the Blazers have done. And, again realistically, we probably will do about the same next year, losing a couple really good players and replacing them with freshmen. Still, it should be interesting, since for a change we'll have the post covered. And maybe those freshmen will come along a little faster than expected. One big question - who will emerge as point guard? Guess I'll turn basketball off for now and wait (impatiently) for spring football. And follow softball.

It's not over, cheer for the women!!! big game today....go Viks!! Playing ISU at 6:00, split season each posting wins on each other's courts....

We have some great talent coming in next year---and rebounders!

We were a short but fast, scrappy team. A 6-7 center in Jamie Jones is unheard of, but what a job he did! Julius came on strong at the close and showed his talent and leadership. Dom was our league all-star.

Next year, we bring in two centers of great size and quality along with a prodigy you may have heard of with the surname of Tapscott. Melvin Jones is next to follow JD and then Dom for floor leader. I think the players coming back will jell quickly.

Our downfall in the game against Weber is curable with the players we have coming in for next season---rebounding and free throws. We have to make our free throws (100 a day) and our quality centers will lead us to a "double-your-pleasure" Scott Morrison Era. I think we can do really well next year.

That's figuring Tapscott as a shooting guard, which he could be at 6'5", while Mel shifts to point guard. Tapscott and Hariell switch off. Hariell has come along fast as a freshman. Tapscott has a lot of raves, but that's at CC level. How he does in Dvision I is another matter. Our Rainier recruit might well work in behind Lozeau, but he's sure to be a work in progress. It all hangs on Mel as point guard and someone to back him up.

Yeah, I was figuring Tapscott as a 2-guard. I think it is also possible that Thomas would come off the bench and that Guede could start with either him or Nelson playing the 4 in a small lineup.

I was impressed with the way that Geving kept this team together in the month of February to fight into the six spot to get into a position to be one of the four teams at the conference tourney. It would have been easy for the guys to mail it in and let the season go after losing eight of ten, and dropping three straight at home. Also, we had one of our best scorers out during this time, as well as having less practice time all year due to the penalty from the NCAA. One question that I have is this. Why did we finally start pressuring on defense and running Mel at the point more (Waters more of a two guard) when it was do or die near the end of the conference schedule? Makes me wonder why we didn't do this, or if it was a result of Nelson being out of the lineup.

Looking to next season...

I think we'll be picked around 5th or so by the media/coaches polls. Better because we're bigger, but not much better since we lose Jamie, Julius, and Dom. However, for the first time in what seems like forever, we'll have size. Jamie had a hell of a season and was our only 'big' that we really had. We just couldn't match up versus Montana with the size that we had. Mel should shine at the point next year. He's JD quick and hit .418 from beyond the arch this season. His A/TO ratio needs to increase, and I suspect that it will. What we need next year to put us in the race for the conference is good backup point guard play, Tree to fill the shoes of Julius, and some solid play by Harriel and Guede.

So do the Vikings have any more scholarships available?I would like to see a JC combo gaurd added if they could.I see the starters as Jones,Guede,Nelson,Thomas and Lozeau. What ever happened to Jacobsen?Did he enroll at PSU and is he still an option?

He is at PSU last I knew. Microfracture knee surgery like the one Greg Oden had as a rookie kept him out this year. Unless things have changed, he's going to be on the team next year with 4 years of eligibility.

Is this the guy from Lake Oswego? I forgot all about him.
