FBS Rumors: Snow Belt Conference

There are rumors of the Montana schools partnering with the Dakotas, to establish a new FBS Conference, with a CA footprint.

It would be called the Snow Belt Conference…

The movement even has a hashtag on Twitter…

This is the single dumbest idea I've seen in a long time (there are so many logistical NCAA hurdles as to why this could NEVER happen at once).

Colter -- you should know better than to give some backup RB with no ties to ever working in college athletics a platform to discuss his dumb idea. I thought you were a journalist...

Can I come on next week and discuss my proposal that all games in North Dakota must be played with a tub of cream cheese instead of a football?

Damn, now I want a bagel.

Not many Salmon in Montucky. But lots of trout.
First off, the NCAA isnt sanctioning any more FBS conferences, that is why the WAC saw an influx of misfits trying to claw their way to FBS using the grandfather WAC 'was' an FBS conference clause.

If the P5 breaks away and the G5/FCS are left in the NCAA, then perhaps a re-schuffling, ala 1976 (?), will take place and many of the FCS in name only schools are re-classified as D2, will there be an opening for more FBS conferences.

Pretty sure this guy knows that, at least I hope. Or, he is just trying to create a demand for marketable sports wear. Don't see Idawho trying the FBS scenario again.

I understand the tongue in cheek nature of this chatter. It’s just nice to be included for once now that we’re good lol.

Freaking Kennesaw State is moving up now… Leaked today - to Conference USA with an 8,300 seat football stadium. It’s nice, but seriously, KSU?

The thing Sac State will always have going for it above most other FCS programs -- including Montucky and NDST -- is being located in a top 20 media market. That's always been an ace-in-the-hole for this university and it's athletic programs.

If this administration can ever get things together and build the facilities -- there will be more than a few FBS conferences eager to add a top 20 media market into their conference portfolio.

And while the Hornets may not now have a significant or wide viewership in any of the major sports -- we all know continued winning helps to solve that issue. As does improving facilities and fan experience. We've already been seeing an increase in coverage and interest in the football program during the the Troy Taylor era that will surely continue to increase with more success and building of the brand.

Yet a 2nd ace-in-the-hole is the fact that the next closest FBS programs are located in Reno, Berkeley, Palo Alto and San Jose. 130 miles, 82 miles, 120 miles and 123 miles away respectively.

The SAC metro area has been ripe for the taking for a long time now. The Hornets just need to capture it while they still have the chance.

If they manage that feat and build up the facilities -- FBS is a sure thing.

IDC about the historical gridiron success of the likes of Montucky and NDST. There's little-to-no chance a viable FBS conference would prefer programs located in Montana and North Dakota over a top 20 media market in CA that has bridged the gap in facilities and would be the only FBS program in the metro area for basically 100 miles.

The time to strike was 20 years ago. But it's still not too late.

Excellent post. The goal should be positioning the department for a MWC invite in the event a spot comes open there. The Broad 2.0 (assuming it comes with concession and bathroom amenities) will allow Hornet Stadium to check all the boxes for an FBS ready venue. With Golden 1 an option for hoops, the Nest isn't that big of a hurdle, if at all. All other facilities (once lights are added for soccer and softball) meet or exceed MWC standards.

Regarding the viability of this "Snow Belt Conference"? Yeah sounds like nothing more than a pipe dream some rando on an obscure fan board website might come up with. Yawn.
