STATS announced their FCS Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year finalists. These awards are gonna replace the Walter Payton Award and the Buck Buchanan Award this year.

FCS Offensive Player of the Year finalists:

Cooper Kupp
Kade Harrington, RB - Lamar
Marshaun Coprich, RB - Illinois State

FCS Defensive Player of the Year Finalists:

James Cowser, DE - Southern Utah
Tyrone Holmes, DE - Montana
Patrick Onwuasor, FS - Portland State

My money is on Kupp winning and Cowser for setting the FCS career sack record. Big Sky sweep.

Wow, not one quarterback in the offensive finals! Cooper Kupp wins this, hands down. I wonder if he waited to announce he was staying at Eastern to increase his chance at winning. You know how these committees favor seniors heavily...

Also, who would have thought the Big Sky would sweep the defensive player awards. I guess there are a lot of gems in our conference, but not a lot of strong units.

Votes were cast before the playoffs began. It is who it is.

It would be a black eye on the FCS should Coprich win this considering his arrest in the offseason. And the fact ISU basically did nothing after he plead guilty except reinstate him....

This is Kupps to lose...

Yes, what I am saying is that many people were assuming this would be his last year. This increased his chances to win the award. He may have known he was staying longer, but chosen to wait to announce until the final tallies were in for the award.

Just an off the wall theory, but may have influenced the timing.

My opinion, I think Coop wins this one by a landslide.

What is the record this season without Cooper? Welcome to the nightmare.

IMO the biggest threat to Cooper winning is the defensive award. All three defensive finalists are Big Sky players. Would the committee hold that against Cooper so both top awards do not go to the Big Sky?

Not sure, but they can only vote on who's put before them. And in my opinion it will come down to Coop and the other guy (not Coprich).

Hopefully they vote on the offensive player first so that this isn't even a consideration.

It's my understanding that the voting has already occurred for both awards. The top three invited are the top three vote recipients. They just won't announce who the winners are until the night of the awards banquet. Just as a side note, the following Big Sky players placed in the top 25 vote recipients:

OPOY:

5th - QB Case Cookus, Northern Arizona
8th - QB Dakota Prukop, Montana State

DPOY:

18th - DE Darnell Sankey, Sacramento State

The voting does happen before the playoffs begin. It really seems like this has been a QB or RB award in recent years. Which is why I'd love to see a WR win it. He is deserving.

Bill Barnum and Northern Arizona QB Case Cookus were recently named the STATS FCS Coach and Freshman of the Year. The Big Sky could conceivably sweep the four major awards this year if Cooper wins in his category.
