Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Wide Receiver Dominique Johnson of Cal Poly, quarterback Chris Triester of Maine, defensive end Christian Anthony of Grambling and returnman Tim Toone of Weber State have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Dominique Johnson, Cal Poly, Junior, 6-3, 206, WR, Moreno Valley, CA.
Johnson established career highs with 13 catches for 273 yards and five touchdowns in Cal Polys 50-48 loss to South Dakota Saturday at home. Johnsons five scoring catches is a school record, breaking the old mark of four set by Ramses Barden against Weber State in 2007. In setting a season high in receiving yards for Great West Conference receivers, he scored on catches that spanned 20, 59, 13, 42 and 42 yards. Cal Poly trailed 50-28 with 4:23 to go in the third quarter and Johnson ignited the comeback with his last three touchdown catches.
Chris Treister, Maine, Sophomore, 6-0, 203, Quarterback, Cape Elizabeth, ME.
Treister guided Maine to a 41-17 win over Rhode Island Saturday. The sophomore quarterback, playing in place of an injured Warren Smith, completed 39-of-45 passes for 465 yards and five touchdowns. He also led the Black Bears in rushing with 33 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts. Treister also matched and set school records in his offensive outburst. Treisters 39 completions break the Maine record set by Mickey Fein in 1997, while his completion percentage of 86.7 marks a new all-time single-game best for the Black Bears program.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Christian Anthony, Grambling, Senior, 6-4, 275, Defensive End, Birmingham, AL.
Anthony led Grambling to a 47-33 home victory over Texas Southern in SWAC play on Thursday night, with an incredible all-around performance. Anthony forced two fumbles, recovering one and returning it 24 yards and intercepted his fifth pass of the season and returned it 33 yards to set up a pair of touchdowns. Anthony's interception, which he returned to the two-yard line, clinched the win for Grambling with Texas Southern trying to get the game- tying score in the final minute. The Buck Buchanan Award candidate also had five tackles, three solo stops, two tackles for five yards of losses, one quarterback sack and two quarterback hurries during the game. For the season, Anthony has 67 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, six quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He has returned two interceptions for touchdowns and a third was lateralled to a teammate, who scored.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tim Toone, Weber State, Senior, 5-10, 175, Punt Returner, Peoria, AZ.
Toone returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and finished with 181 all- purpose yards in Weber State's 29-7 victory over Northern Arizona. Toone's return, on a snow-covered, slippery field, put the Wildcats ahead 13-9 with 6:50 to play in the third quarter. Toone, who leads the nation in punt returns, has scored twice on returns of 90-plus yards this season. Toone also caught eight passes for 91 yards during the win. Toone has 18 punt returns for 382 yards and 66 catches for 882 yards. He has scored nine TDs this year.
