Few expect [EWU] to offer a legitimate challenge to the WSU

So not sure where this data came from-- "The Eagles opened their season with a convincing 20-3 win at hapless Idaho on Thursday, though few expect them to offer a legitimate challenge to the Cougars." (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2012/aug/31/cougars-know-they-need-alterations/) It's pretty amazing that even the WSU beat writer has drank the Kool AId. There is absolutely no evidnce to support this claim. This is blatantly irresoponsible journalism, even for a sports writer.

Frankly, I'm dissapointed in the SR for allowing this garbage to be published. If this is the opinion of the Cougar organization (who is 9-41 since 2008) than I hope we absolutely embarass them. They are dealing with a team that has actually passed on the recruits they've picked up in recent years.

I simply don't understand how anyone could simply brush us off. Hope our guys are ready to go. Just because you hire the pirate, doesn't mean your problems are over.

Well, few Cougar fans. UW fans however...

My guess is the line will probably put WSU at around 14-17 point favorites for this one, which, all things considered is probably about right. We have never beaten a Pac-12 team in the existance of the program, but there's always a first for everything.

I'm probably the ultimate homer, but I can't comprehend how we can be 17 point underdogs to this program. Am I missing something?

-They're playing EWU at home.
-Stadium expansion
-Better conf
-Probably will have 20k fans in attendance
-they probably have bigger n better recruits on average (lets be honest)
-EWU has never beat a PAC 12 team

After watching the 'fuzzy' Idaho game I can give you several reasons why we will beat WSU.
1) - Kyle Padron, granted he had a shaky start, but now that he's warmed up, watch out. I'm hoping he will settle down in the pocket and have a quicker release picking the WSU def. apart.
2) - The best wide recieving corps in FCS football. (Hope they play Cory Mitchell more).
3) - Solid shutdown defense. Ronnie Hamlin is a beast and TJ Lee will get at least two picks.
4) - Jake Miller, but hoping he never has to come in.
5) - Beau Baldwin vs. Mike Leach. Edge: Baldwin Everyone knows what Leach is going to do but Leach will get outcoached and caught off guard.
6) - Fans, I'm pretty sure that we will be louder and match thier numbers. If you don't travel to this game, your ticket priveleges for the rest of the season should be revoked.
7) - Running Game, something we didn't have last year.
8) - Pride
9) - Experience
10) - The will for a perfect season and coming back to Frisco so I can attend a game.

" . . . blatantly irresponsible journalism . . ."?

Naw, just an opinion held by many people because EWU is FCS. That's all. Is there an inherent arrogance from a Pac-12 fan base toward the Big Sky? Always. But that doesn't guarantee a WSU win. It just is what it is.

Agree. It's not irresponsible journalism, it's just poor quality journalism. I had to scroll back up to make sure Vince Grippi wrote it and then found out and remembered that several of the senior staff have taken early retirements. It feels like a school newspaper piece written by someone unfamiliar with covering football and EWU's program in particular.

Padron should only get better from the pocket with going through his progressions, and his accuracy. I don't know if that will all come together THIS week, but if it does we have much more than a punchers chance.

WSU needed poor Montana State playcalling to win a couple of years ago. So, anything can happen.

I tweeted this very question to the reporter. He responded: "...it was simply a reference to fact that many WSU fans view it as a gimme. Is it? Who knows? "

So apparently we're talking about WSU fans. May have wanted to make that attribution in the article. And that's kind of a wafflie answer anyways. Can't wait til Saturday!

There has been over 30k tickets sold, just an fyi. I'm guessing a sellout if it isn't already.

Sounds like back-peddling to me.

On paper (as with the Idaho game) we're supposed to be the underdog due to 22 fewer scholarships and factoring in that we give partial scholarships to many players as opposed to the required full ride in FBS. Add in the preception of being a Pac-12 team and its easy to see why we aren't the favorites by a long shot for the casual fan.

I'm not gonna complain - let's do our talking on the field like we did against UW (and Idaho) who both were expecting a smack down. I think we gained a lot of respect from the Husky fans last year and we'll likely have their fanbase pulling for us to beat WSU.

Even the Seattle Times who listed us as one of three teams WSU *should* beat, added a note that we'll probably be the toughest of those three teams to beat.

WSU looked terrible against BYU and BYU isn't great. playing a Leach team you usually have to out-score them to win. WSU only scored 6 points the other night. Our defense can keep them under 21, I feel confident our offense will put up at least the 30 that BYU did. How about starting the season with 2 road victories against D-1 programs? That would be a first and set us up for a nice run in the conference. Go Eags.

BYU is pretty good. They went 10-3 last year, and won their bowl game.

First off, I'm a Cougar fan.

Second, while some beat writer (who probably doesn't pay much attention to FCS football) might think that WSU's going to trample Eastern, I assure you, that is NOT how the Cougar Nation feels.

I follow the program at Eastern pretty closely, and I predicted a three score victory over Idaho. Idaho fans did not appreciate that, but I didn't pick the Eagles to piss off Vandals fans, I picked them because I felt they were the better, more experienced team, with fewer question marks and better coaching.

I promise you, the Cougars have respect for your program, especially after the butt-whooping you put on UW last season (unfortunately, the scoreboard didn't reflect that, but UW got lucky).

I wish you guys the best of luck. Obviously, I'll be pulling for my Cougars to win, but this game scares the crap out of me. The home field and scholarship depth should give us an advantage, but your receivers are pretty darn good, and our secondary is pretty darn bad (based on what I saw on Thursday).

I'm hoping our offense throws a lot of points on the board, only because of how poorly our offense stalled against BYU, but I'm definitely not expecting us to smash you guys. If anything, I'm HOPING we win.

And with our lethargic secondary, I could see him doing an excellent job of that. By far, our biggest weakness is your strength.
2) - The best wide recieving corps in FCS football. (Hope they play Cory Mitchell more).
Agreed, but we have a pretty darn good receiving corps, too. Our problem last week was our quarterback's inability to make a decision, despite having 6 or 7 seconds to throw the ball. He's played like a great quarterback and future NFL 3rd round draft pick at times, but it appears the rust from not playing last year hasn't been shaken. On thursday, he looked like a true freshman.
3) - Solid shutdown defense. Ronnie Hamlin is a beast and TJ Lee will get at least two picks.
I have respect for your defense, and this isn't a dig, but I do think BYU's defense is tougher than Eastern's. In fact, BYU's defense might be the toughest we play besides Oregon's (we don't play USC this year). Eastern's defense, particularly your All-American corner and All-American safety, scare me a bit.
4) - Jake Miller, but hoping he never has to come in.
5) - Beau Baldwin vs. Mike Leach. Edge: Baldwin Everyone knows what Leach is going to do but Leach will get outcoached and caught off guard.
Well, so far in 2012, that appears to be the case. But Leach's entire body of work, I would disagree with you on that one. However, it doesn't matter what Leach did, it matters what he can still do. He definitely has his work cut out.
6) - Fans, I'm pretty sure that we will be louder and match thier numbers. If you don't travel to this game, your ticket priveleges for the rest of the season should be revoked.
This is really the only thing on your post I downright disagree with. We have +30K tickets sold so far for a stadium that seats 35K. We'll be much louder...As long as we aren't getting our @$$es kicked.
7) - Running Game, something we didn't have last year.
Yep. You got us on that one.
8) - Pride
We probably will never come to an agreement on this one, but after the last few years, our confidence is not exactly sky high right now. Still, if you still have pride in a 9-41 team, you can be pretty sure that at the very least, you don't have as many band wagon fans as some other programs might (cough cough, UW).
9) - Experience
Yep. Got us there. No argument here.
10) - The will for a perfect season and coming back to Frisco so I can attend a game.
I suppose, our desire to reach a bowl game hinges on winning all the winnable games. While this game scares the crap out of me, and is entirely losable, it's also winnable. So our will for a bowl game might be our equivalent to your will for a perfect season. For the record, I know that a lot of EWU fans seem to think the feeling at WSU is that we don't respect you and we think we'll just smash you, but that's not the case. We all saw the UW game last year, we all are familiar with the program (when Wulff was hired, we all kind of adopted Eastern as our FCS favorite), and we know you guys are a legitimate threat to us. Hopefully it's a good game and no players on either side our seriously injured.
