I took a lot out of this game tonight against Mississippi St.
1) I thought the eags looked great in the first half when we were able to play aggressive on defense. Once the fouls started getting called, I thought we lost our edge on defense and that really kept us from blowing the game wide open.
2) We've got guys that can get to the rim. McBroom was blowing by guards that were equally quick.
3) I don't believe we will NEED to rely on the 3 as much this year even though I still believe we are going to shoot it a ton. Our ability to drive the ball with our guards AND our bigs will win us a ton of games.
4) We don't play well when we take our foot off of the gas petal. We lost our aggressive mentality midway through the 2nd half when we almost had a 10 point lead. And last time I checked, playing it safe doesn't work in any sport. Eags need to keep a "go for the jugular" mentality if they want to beat good teams and be a Cinderella in March.
5) Austin McBroom is really dynamic. He is the best point guard in the Big Sky in my opinion.
6) Venky, Blizzard, or McBroom will win the Big Sky MVP in my opinion. They all looked great tonight and pretty much had their way when they were aggressive.
7) Ty Gibson played a lot. Didn't shoot well tonight but you know Hayford believes in him A LOT with the kind of minutes he played tonight as a true freshman in a big game. I've seen the kid fill it up and it is a thing of beauty when he does. Eags will be even better once he finds his shot.
8) Sir Washington can finish. He hit some crazy shots driving in the paint. He also has some ups.
9) We still don't know enough about our bench. I know there is tons of talent sitting on it, just waiting to see what Hayford does with it.
10) Once this team gels, the SKY is the limit. The talent on this team is some of the best I've ever seen at EWU. We need to figure some things out defensively though. I loved our first defensive series or two when we came out super aggressive. We were applying backcourt pressure and I thought it threw Miss St. off a ton.

It's soooo early in the season and this team looks like it will be as good, if not better than last year's team. Can't wait to see what we can do once we hit our stride. The talent is there to Dance again this year.

Other thoughts?

go eags!

I was really impressed with McBroom. He ran the offense well and as Rafter_Reese noted slashed to the rim really well. Julian Harrell did not play. Is he injured?

McBroom is damn good...maybe one of the better PG's we've had at EWU since, Alvin Snow? Seriously, dude is a baller. Obviously our bigs are going to cause a lot of matchup problems for teams. Blizzard and Venky are going to do some serious damage. Not a lot known about the bench...lots of youth there, but I am excited about this year's team.

Looks like McBroom perhaps hurt his collar bone...believe he went into locker room. It was at the end of the game but he was hurtin for certain.

I watched the trainer work on him and it seemed like although he was in pain, he was able to do the stress tests. Hopefully he is OK. He is a great point guard.
