First Scrimmage

Sometimes you walk away from a scrimmage thinking “well that was mediocre”. Not yesterday’s scrimmage. It was a good spirited scrimmage with a lot of intensity and few mistakes. Overall it reminded me of two good teams getting after each other, really focused, competing hard and executing.

The write up of the scrimmage on GOEAGS.com summarized the scrimmage well and headlined “Offense Piles Up 466 Yards in First Scrimmage”. But it seemed that only a small fraction of that yardage was gained against the #1 defense. Although both units played great, the #1 defense outplayed the #1 offense. The DLine and LBs looked quick and defended the run well. The secondary was impressive with really tight coverage and delivered solid run support.

Vernon Adams has changed since last year. VA is stronger this year, thicker and his throwing motion has improved. Last year at times he seemed to have a weird ‘hitch’ on long throws. This year he looks smooth with a good release, much stronger arm this year. We need not worry about the offense. It will move the ball this year and score plenty.

I wouldn't worry too much about stats in the scrimmages. I don't think Hamlin showed in them yesterday either and we know that doesn't mean anything...

For those that saw it...noticed Miquiyah Zamora was not listed as getting any tackles. Did he play?

Observer, I am not sure if he was on the field. I did not have a roster in front of me. There was a #35 playing weakside, inside LB on the #2 defense that was very active and was involved in tackles.

Anyone else out there that can help?

I don't think Zamora played. He was wearing his #49 jersey but I think he's nursing a bit of a knee injury right now.

ckupp2,
Just got back from practice, finished @ 5pm, had to cut my back yard since I don't have a Cow/Horse to do the job for me ;) Zamora was doing a lot of sprinting today, he must be feeling better. The Team is really coming along, and doing very well. Aug 31st is getting very close, will watch game on TV. I noticed the Offense today, they have some quick feet, very impressed with them. Tomorrow will relax at home, take care of my garden. Vic

I was at Saturday's scrimmage, and as you may have read from the write-up from EWU, it was a VERY situational scrimmage. The offense put the ball on whatever yard line they wanted, and did the play calling from there. Early on, it was from inside their own 20 yard line, and the defense pretty much dictated the tempo and outperformed the offense. The "D" looked very good!! Then as the scrimmage progressed, and the offense got more plays under there belt, they started meshing and moving the ball. As this whole process went on, then the offense and defense started subbing in 2's and 3's intermixed with 1's. That's when it got really fun on both sides on the ball seeing players make plays on O and D! It was really a fun scrimmage to be at as there were many plays made on both sides. Yes, the offense scored 8 times, but many of those were short yardage situations, but some from the so called non-starters, but still early to determine who they may be, guys are fighting for those spots. it looks like we are 2 deep at many positions easily and even 3 deep at some spots. The O line looks very great, just trying to solidify RT, Cassidy, Rogers (WSU transfer) and Boatright. All in all, it looks like all the off season work for this team has made them ready for the upcoming season. as tough as it will be.
I saw a lot of talent out there on Saturday, the VET's and even some of the new and Frosh. Really looking forward to the start of the season. Having a coaching staff like ours that's been there going on 5 years for many of them, big advantage . Party on and GO VIC, your the BEST!!

I didn't get to see the scrimmage and I am curious how our new receiving corps did.

I did get to see the Grizzlies scrimmage. It's a relief to hear that our secondary is flying around, because since they have returned their rap.....err.... Quarterback Jordan Johnson, their passing game is definitely back. Their offense rolled over the defense. If our receiving corps is looking solid, I have no doubt we will roll over their defense as well.

Rjones61,
Our Wide Receivers, are going to be outstanding. Cooper Kupp, automatic, Cory Mitchell, Ashton Clark, Nic Sblendorio, is catching anything and everything thrown their way. Nic runs some fantastic routes. We have a walk on Marcel Morris, is has some great hands. Now my main man (little Shaq Hill, Daniel Johnson, Kendrick Bourne. some speed on the Offense. Don't know who will be starting, whom ever starts, we will be very pleased with. At yesterdays practice, I saw Kupp, Mitchell, Nic, Daniel, Shaq, Ashton, all catching and running after the catch. We will be alright. :thumb :thumb: :thumb: : :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: Defense and Offense, will surprise a lot of teams, CB/LB, are going to also surprise you. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

To All,
Saw those new uniforms today, they are very sharp. For the ones that were asking about the names on backs? No their names on their back. On the top of right and left shoulders is what I would call wings. Will be there tomorrow for the early practice if I can get to bed early enough. Vic

To All,
Players received their uniforms today on Roos Field. Forgot to mention. Coaches are wearing some sharp black with red shirts, also look sharp. Vic

Thanks Vic. Team photo was just taken did they have you in the photo? They should you are a big part of the team.

Great seeing you last Saturday, I promise to call you at home from Corvallis after we earn our first Pac-12 win. I know you and Chris will be watching the game and listening to Larry and Paul.

Are you as impresssed with both the O-line and D-line as me? I think that is the strength of the 2013 Eagle team. Coach Best and Coach Sawyer match up with coaches in any league including the Pac-12.

The young man from Shadle Park looks like he is ready to play some football. It must be challenging for both coaches regarding playing time but what a great problem to have. Go Eagles.

JoinTheEAA,
Thanks for the kind words. No we were not in the picture, wasn't looking to be. We will be watching the game on TV. I heard that Oregon is also having a game @ 1pm, glad I am not heading that way. Traffic is going to be some problems. Here is hoping everything goes well, including s "Big Victory" :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Yes, I am very much impressed with both OL/DL. I have been looking at some of the new Recruits on OL they are all are coming along very well. "Our Gentle Giant Cassidy Curtis" is looking good also. I have so much fun looking at the OL do those rope exercises, very impressed with the speed of their feet. Great seeing you also last Saturday, will be there again tomorrow morning. Hope to see a great turnout for the scrimmage. I know my good buddy Neal & Cal will be there. Wish we were going to the Game, not familiar with the area, now that I found out there is another game going on about 1 pm, I am happy we're staying in Spokane. Enjoy your trip all EWU Backers, and return back safely. Go Eagles!!!!!Vic Wallace
