Flashcards causing more problems

When are these guys going to ditch the damn flashcards?

What's more outdated, the mustache? or the flashcards? Good hell Verlin, they're just flashcards...

Also heard the assistant wasn't allowed on the team bus and had to ride with the radio guy. Doesn't matter what he did, no one deserves to be berated and embarrassed in public like that. Verlin acted like a two year old and should be disciplined. Stew's system is dead, or at least it should be dead. It doesn't work anymore. USU has finally realized this and is why Rahe or Verlin won't be considered for the Aggie job.

For those of us not in the know, what exactly are these flashcards?

And terrible display by Idaho's coach. :ohno:

They indicate which plays to run at the time they "flash the card." Verlin's mentor, Stew Morrill at Utah State, has been doing it forever.

All teams use signals of some kind, both from the bench and between players on the floor. Whether you use spoken words, hand signals, or a flash card, the whole team needs to know what set you are in. You can't call a time out every time down the floor. Very few programs leave the play calling up to the guys on the floor. Most plays come from the bench. If your signal is too simple, it is easy for the other team to know what you are running. If it is too complex, you run the risk of confusing your own team mates. Any way you cut it, you want everyone on the same page.

In Idaho's case, you had an assistant not following instructions from the head coach. The head coach acted inappropriately, but I understand the frustration. To me, the less links you have in the communication process the better.

With Ron A. it was all about hand signals and, on the surface, it appeared quite simple. However, they changed it up situationally and from week to week. There were also some slight nuances that kept the other team guessing. No system is perfect and every coach settles on what they are most comfortable with. :coffee:

...and
In addition, the seventh-year Vandals coach will also have to attend a leadership development class.

Maybe he'll be taught in class that it would be appropriate to issue an apology to the assistant coach as well. I've never liked Idaho but it was usually because of the conduct of their players.

This thread should be named something else. It's clear that Verlin's problems are not caused by the flash cards. They seem to run a little deeper than that. I'm really surprised that the assistant is still there and has not sued UI and Verlin. Maybe that is why Verlin hasn't fired him. It would make the suit too easy, and UI would be on the hook for a lot of money. I would think that Verlin will be on a very, very, very short leash for the rest of his tenure at UI, and that it might not be that easy for him to find another job.

Maybe Joe Cravens could help him out in that regard.

Thanks. Figured it was something along those lines, but to my knowledge we never had a coach that used this system.

That coach on the left looks like he has a lot of confidence in the play call....lol
