I don't debate either prediction. until NAU starts winning the close ones, the Jacks are middle of the pack.

Oceanvue.

Good to see someone showing interest in the upcoming season (you've been posting a lot @ championshipsubdivision.com). MSU, UM and WSU's boards tend to be the most active of the Big Sky Conference teams. UND's board seems to be reasonably active as well.

Five of last year's seven losses were by a grand total of 20 points. Jacks were in those games up til the end. Tantalizingly close. Their only two bad losses were on the road to U of A and MSU. Find a way to win some of those tight games and it's a different season. I have no doubt at all this will be a talented NAU team, especially on offense, but the kicker is finding a way to make that one less mistake or break one more big play that is the difference in close games.

A lot of Jacks fans gripe, with due reason, about not getting the results football fans want. But...to say this team has been thoroughly outclassed the last few seasons is incorrect. UM, MSU, EWU and WSU are generally the top tier of competition in the Big Sky and NAU has rarely been blown out by these teams the last few years.

I am excited and I will be in Tempe for the ASU game. Hope to be in Las Vegas for the UNLV game and aim to make one later season game in Flagstaff as well.

     nice touch Jack...I love that movie...

Our best game of the season always seems to be the first one. We play U of A and Arizona State pretty tough and don't get blown out as many expect us to. I hope this is not once again the highlight of the season

Season after season I have been hopefull that we will have the season that will take us to the playoffs, but season after season it's the same broken record. We start off hot, then go on our regular losing streak towards the end of the season to finish at aroun .500 and middle of the pack in the conference.

I have to say I'm not too excited about this season because honestly I don't expect anything different. I would like to see the team start over with a new coach and see where that takes us. Jerome has demonstrated what he can do, and middle of the pack is not where NAU should be... :twocents: :twocents: :twocents: :twocents:

I hope I'm wrong about this season, but down deep I know I've seen this movie before... :( :( :( :(

NAU won't beat ASU. Just don't see it happening. I don't see it as a stretch to say that UNLV is beatable, though. I'll gladly accept a 15th straight loss to Montana if it means NAU wins the majority of the rest of their games and makes the playoffs.

I am guardedly optimistic, as usual. NAU has a shot to have a darned good offense but a bunch of new starters on defense and special teams provide many questions marks. Wish I was in Flagstaff to check out a few scrimmages.

I get to catch the ASU and UNLV games to start the season. Really looking forward to UNLV.

Thursday in Tempe was brutal. There's absolutely no way of sugarcoating that beatdown other than to say the Jacks new punter has a pretty good day. I've seen all of the recent NAU vs ASU/UA games in Tempe and Tucson except for two and this was by far the ugliest of the bunch.

NAU's crowd was smaller than in the past but that could be due to it being an off night (THursday) and right before a major holiday weekend? The band was into it. NAU's crowd never had a shot as it was over the minute the game began.

It was a normal night in Tempe. A few twitchy meth addicts at Zia Records, a gaggle of drunk asshole ASU fratboys talking shit while walking down Mill Avenue, a good sandwich and beer pre-game and a visit with a few friends at the game made for a good night apart from the final outcome.

Adding injury to insult....... it looks like Bauman went down with a head injury and Grossart injured his knee.

I found it interesting that the Daily Sun and Northern Arizona News (NAU's website for "The Lumberjack" paper) had little or no mention of the game on Friday's, Saturday's or today's coverage. Hmm? Possibly pretending it never happened? I'm all for revisionist history in this case.

It Grossart and Bauman are no-go's next Saturday then, even though UNLV is the dregs, I don't give the Jacks much of a shot. Here's hoping though. Onward to UNLV.

yea, I saw the score. Pretty ugly huh? Usually NAU doesn't give blow outs like these, hope that's not a sign of things to come this season. It's too bad that those guys got injured. Unfortunately that's a risk teams take when they play teams that are bigger, stronger and more athletic.

I also noticed the same thing about the media not reporting the game that well. There was all this hoopla on facebook and on the NAU website before the game, and then on Friday, I really had to look hard to find anything on the game. When I finally did, the story and details were brief, but I figured everyone is trying to forget about it and move on :D :D :D :D Pretending it never happened makes it less painful :) :)

Oh well, I'm not really expecting much from NAU football as long as Jerome Sours keeps coaching. How many times have we made the playoffs under him? Wasn't it like one time back in 2003? Hope he gets the boot real soon and get someone else that can produce winning teams. Tired of the same thing year after year.

Well, here's to a good game against UNLV and hopefully no more injuries since a win is not likely :(

Terrible news. This is my biggest concern about these FBS games. I don’t really mind a blow out so long as the check doesn’t bounce and we can get through them injury free. We got through the NMSU game with no serious injuries and I am hoping we are that fortunate against after this week’s game at Colorado.

What is the word on their injuries to Bauman and Grossart? Pretty serious or just minor ones?

Hey, SDHornet.

I've seen no word on their injuries/status for this weekend against UNLV. NAU Athletics tends to keep this stuff close to their chests. I expect to find out the first offensive series. There aren't a million internet perps....err, I mean....fans stalking practice or players twitter and facebook accounts like with some other Big Sky teams. Re: Bauman. I've had a few concussions in my life. Felt loopy for 2-3 weeks after a car wreck. If Bauman is back on the field right after one then I can only hope and pray he don't permanently damage himself. I enjoy players competitive attitudes but would tend to err to the side of caution if I was a coach/trainer/parent/player.

I was cautiously optimistic that NAU had a shot to take out a mediocre UNLV team this year. Last Thursday in Tempe lessened...maybe deadened... my optimism. Still going to Vegas to watch the game

That was awesome. Lost my voice in the stands last night. A darned good contingent of NAU fans in attendance...mostly local Nevada Lumberjack alumni and family members/friends of players. NAU had many chances to roll over and die last night but they didn't. Kudos to them. There is talent on this team and they have a shot to be competitive from here on in conference.

Cartright has a pretty good arm. He doesn't seem to be the most mobile qb but I was impressed for this being his first true start. NAU's punter averaged 49 yards...holy crap! Defense gave up a lot of rushing yardage in the first half but made some good second half adjustments. Bauman's a beast.

Starting conference play two weeks from now in Missoula should be fun. I've said it before and I'll say it again....why not this year to end the streak against U of M? If this Jacks team gets obliterated vs. ASU, goes down 14 on the road to another FBS team (UNLV) and then guts out a win then they've shown me they aren't going to quit.

Re: UNLV. Got multiple blank stares from people around town when I mentioned the UNLV football game. Runnin Rebel basketball is obviously priority one with local sports fans. It wasn't even on the radar while conversing with people in sports bars. UNLV played a signature smash mouth "Bobby Hauck" football game but the difference is the Rebels are lacking the killer instinct the Griz teams had over the years. UNLV's stadium lacks just about any amenities and it being so far away from the campus leaves it with a sterile and desolate feel. Dare I say, NAU football is in better shape overall than UNLV football! Rebel fans on the local newspaper website and on rebelnet (forum) were frothing at the mouth. I have a feeling Bobby Hauck may not last as a head coach there but I don't think it's all his fault though he'll ultimately take the fall. Urban Meyer or Nick Saban couldn't fix the problems with UNLV's football program/lack of support/shitty facilities.

Awesome win for the Jacks - great to see them finally get a FBS win after all of these years!!

Getting a DI win is crucial as well for playoff chances.

I know UNLV football is struggling but I don't think it's anything that winning wouldn't fix. A lot of facilities are away from campus and UNLV being sort of a commuter school a lot of students live off campus too. Of course the stands weren't full but I've been to games back east where they would die to have that many people at the game (think most MAC teams) I was at the game, and I thought it got pretty loud on several occasions. I think UNLV might get a couple of surprise wins this year and the ASU game was an aberration and NAU once fully jelled could be a real nice team.
