football camps

Do the Eagles have summer football camps? What piqued my curiosity is the lack of local kids committed to the program. If the camps are still going on I'm assuming the majority of attendees would be from eastern Washington. Since we have only one kid from e.Washington I wonder if they are still going on. I've heard a number of coaches say they first came into contact with a recruit at their summer camps.

Lots of summer camp occurring here at Eastern. Brought our team up and there were lots of teams from Eastern Washington both big and small. Also teams from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, all over the map. I know we were on the early weekend and there were 20 teams I believe and there were even more teams scheduled for the following weekend. It is an awesome experience for kids....but doesn't help explain the reduction of EW kids.

Eastern Washington doesn't produce many great kids, plain and simple. You can find more kids in one recruiting cycle around King and Pierce counties than you could from the GSL in a decade.

Eastern used to have the top lineman camp in the NW. I think they have ditched the skills camp for a team camp.

The summer team camp is the only reason I played at Eastern. My high school went there all three years and I got to know the coaches pretty well. I ended up not being able to play my senior year, but since the coaches at EWU had seen me so many times, they stuck with me. I'm pretty sure it's a big recruiting tool for them.

On top of two seperate TEAM camps at EWU in mid to late June, EWU also holds a one day skills camp for QB/WR/DB's. Its a great one day skills camp. LOTS of players attend. My son attended last summer and it was great, TONS of kids from the East side of the state. Lots of kids from seattle area and Camas and Hockinson (which is near Camas). Tri Cities kids there. Seattle area kids. Even kids from California were there and some kids from Canada. It was cool. I dont know how many or if any kids out of that camp EWU offered. My sons team has attended the EWU team camp every year for the last 5 years now and i coach also so i have seen the team camp up close. It is a GREAT camp. But there seems to be mostly smaller classification schools at the camp. Only a few Class 4A schools each year it seems. Still fun as heck and a great operation. EWU does have the RENEGADES teams at these camps which are teams made up of guys who attend camp solo without a team. EWU obviously personally invites some of these players to be on the renegade team so they can coach them personally and evaluate them close up at these camps. Some of the players on renegade teams are guys who just go to the camp cuz they want to expose themselves to the college staff and show the staff what they got and maybe outcompete other guys etc etc.

Summer camps are a great topic for many reasons, most significant the fact that many kids who enroll at EWU attend our summer camps and eventually graduate. This is true beyond football but in raw number terms football has the biggest influence. Coach Baldwin said during Q and A at the NLI event that they had 1900 kids this past summer. He estimated 40 or 50 are now EWU students but are not on the football team. I think the number may be much higher. We have strong hoop camps too for both men and women. All our summer camps and activities are very helpful with student recruitment.

Getting potential students on campus is the best marketing we can get, whether it's at camp or at a game. Our rec center helps too but that is not affiliated with EWU Athletics. The students built that with rec money, of course with some help from Olympia. It's a great facility.

It's fun to ask our student athletes past and present about our camps and see what they say. I attended Cascadian Football Camp at Wenatchee Valley CC in the dark ages and there were numerous Eagle coaches there including Dick Zornes. Strong Whitworth representation too from Gene Baker and many others. Coach Baldwin and staff have done a terrific job with our camps, check it out this summer. Another example of the economic impact EWU Athletics has on the regional economy.
