SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football program added to its 2008 recruiting class by signing three junior college players to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today. The trio is comprised of linebacker Caleb Hale and receivers John Blea and Kyle Hill. All three players will enroll at the University as juniors in the fall.
“We addressed a need at receiver with these two players,” Sacramento State head coach Marshall Sperbeck said. “They are older and experienced. Hill is more of a slot guy and Blea can play on the outside.
“Caleb Hale provides depth at linebacker and helps us build for the next couple of years.”
Hale earned Junior College All-America honors last season as a sophomore at Fresno City College. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker was also named the California Region II Defensive Player of the Year and was a first team all-Northern California Football Association selection. Hale finished the 2007 season with 71 total tackles, including 16.0 tackles-for-loss and five sacks. He also had one interception which was returned for a touchdown and three pass breakups.
Hale’s high school resumé is equally as impressive. He graduated from Chowchilla High School in 2006 and was named to the Cal-Hi Sports Small Schools All-State team as a utility player, was the MVP for the Madera Tribune and was a first team all-valley selection by CBS 47 in Fresno, Calif. His team also posted a 10-2 record during his senior season and won the section title. That year, he recorded 77 total tackles, including 4.0 sacks, rushed for 1,398 yards and had 22 touchdowns.
Blea is also a product of Fresno City College. As a sophomore, he finished the year 44 receptions for 775 yards and earned all-Central Valley Conference honors. A 6-foot-4, 210-pound target, Blea also runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. His biggest game in 2007 came against Foothill College in the Silicon Valley Bowl where he had nine catches for 161 yards and a touchdown.
Blea prepped at Yosemite High School in Oakhurst, Calif. While with the Badgers, he lettered in football, basketball and track. In football, he was twice named to the all-state team and also earned all-Central Valley, all-Madera Country and all-North Sequoia League honors. His team won the section title during the 2004 season with a 9-2 overall record. That season, Blea finished with 60 receptions for 1,175 yards and eight touchdowns. The following year, he had 56 receptions for 1,068 yards and 10 scores.
A versatile player, who is expected to play in the slot, Hill spent the past two seasons at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif. In 2007, he made 25 catches for 268 yards. He also was the team’s top punt and kick returner, averaging 12.8 yards per punt return and 21.7 yards per kick return. Following the year, he was named first team all-Mission Conference and was the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year. As a freshman, Hill had 24 catches for 305 yards and two touchdowns. He also paced the team with 84.6 all-purpose yards per game.
A 2006 graduate of Oceanside High School, Hill was named all-North County following his junior and senior year and was a two-time all-Avacado League selection as well as the Pirates’ Special Teams Player of the Year. During his final two years, Oceanside HS produced a 23-3 overall record and won a pair of section titles. As a senior, he caught 66 passes for 1,018 yards and six touchdowns.
The trio of recruits join 17 other players who signed with Sacramento State on Feb. 6. The Hornets open the 2008 season on Aug. 30 when they take on Humboldt State.
