Hadn't seen this posted yet. RIP Coach Wooten.

Football: Brent Wooten, a standout football player for the University of Washington who went on to become head coach at Eastern Washington University, died Monday. He was 72.

A celebration of his life will take place on Sept. 9 from 2-6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in Cheney.

Wooten was an assistant for five seasons before taking over the program in 1968. In three seasons he compiled an 11-18 record.

He also served as Eastern athletic director from 1968-70.

Following his tenure in the athletic department, he continued to teach at Eastern, where he spent more than 30 years as a professor.

He was a halfback and defensive back for the University of Washington and played on the school’s back-to-back 10-1 seasons in 1959 and 1960.

Coach Wooten is a huge part of the foundation of our athletic program at EWU. A star on the UW Rose Bowl teams of the early 60's, he coached with Dave Holmes when the program was revived by Coach Holmes, climaxed by EWSC playing in the 1967 NAIA national title game. Coach Wooten stayed at EWU when Dave Holmes left to do the same thing at Hawaii he had done in Cheney, establish a solid football program. Ironically, UW lost to Dave Holmes and the Hawaii team in 1973, even though they were 50 point underdogs. Coach Holmes then returned to Spokane to coach at University High School.

Please attend the memorial for Coach Wooten on Friday, September 9 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Cheney Holiday Inn Express. Red Reese, Dave Holmes, Brent Wooten, Dick Zornes, Larry Hatemer; it is these great coaches that have made us national champions, along with the outstanding staff we now have.
We won the national title on Dave Holmes birthday and the title game is again set for January 7. We can debate on Saturday night whether our win tomorrow against UW is the biggest upset in the history of their program. Ironic UW plays Hawaii next weekend, maybe they can get some payback then.
