The Fresno State defense is big on disguise, big on pressures. And the Bulldogs might have to throw a lot of it at Weber State.
The Wildcats have a senior quarterback in Mike Hoke, who last year completed 62.6% (164 of 262) of his passes for 2,080 yards and 19 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Hoke had a passing efficiency rating of 150.16, which ranked second in the Big Sky Conference and 12th in the Football Championship Subdivision.
He has seen a lot, playing in 26 games with 10 starts heading into Saturday's season opener at Bulldog Stadium.
In two games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents last season, Hoke put together pretty solid games. He hit 19 of 28 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-32 loss at Wyoming to open the season, and 20 of 33 for 138 yards and a touchdown the following week in a 54-17 loss at Utah State.
He did not throw an interception in either game.
"They do a lot of things, multiple personnel group-wise, and they're going to up-tempo some things to try to keep you from subbing to match up, and you can see him making some checks," Bulldogs coach Tim DeRuyter said. "We'll try to do some things disguise-wise to combat that. That's part of our normal package. ... We know it will be a challenge, but I like our plan against him.
"But he's a good competitor and I think he has some good weapons around him. He's a 6-3, 235-pound kid. He's athletic. He'll take the ball and run with it to convert. He's an impressive kid. They have seven starters back on offense, so they have a good nucleus that feels pretty good about themselves."
