Friday Night's Scrimmage

Went out to Roos Friday night for the scrimmage. Offense made some big plays, and so did the D. Wasn't dominated by one side of the ball this week. It was hard to get a feel for how good we are going to be on offense with so many starters watching from the sidelines. Couple of takeaways though. EB3 has taken a pretty big step forward if you ask me. Watched him in the spring and thought he had quite a few things to work on (and obviously he did being a freshman). What I saw yesterday was night and day compared to the player I watched just a few months back. He was crisp. Ball came out on time. Good decision making. Great touch. Dropped a 55-yarder for a TD over the receivers shoulder in stride. I was actually more impressed with an out pattern he hit a guy on that had to be perfectly placed and it was a thing of beauty. He threw one pick.

GG put up decent numbers but I didn't think he looked all the way comfortable. He has thrown a few bad balls for picks the last couple of weeks. Needs to clean up those one or two bad decisions a game if we want to beat teams like Tech. Not really worried about Gage though. He has athleticism that you just can't coach. I have a feeling Gage will start to look more comfortable as our O-line gels. I know Best doesn't want him running the ball as much this year but I think he will end up having to (especially in big games like Tech & NDSU). I wouldn't be surprised if EB3 sees some time this year for one reason or another though.

Defense looked pretty solid. Many starters resting but a lot of depth in the secondary. Gamboa and Tucker had some nice picks. Victor's pick was a thing of beauty. He high-pointed the ball on a pretty good deep ball from EB3 and came down with it. I was also really impressed with Chris Ojoh. Sounds like he might play this year. Our speed on D is evident. I was impressed watching some of our D-ends and backers chase down our mobile QB's.

It will be interesting to see how things come together next week with all of the starters playing. I'm sure it will be a totally different feel than what these scrimmages provide. The adrenaline will be pumping and as we all know...our eags like to show up in the big FBS games.

I thought a much showing yesterday, compared to last Saturday. Eric is playing like he wants to not only play; but start. Gage does seem uncomfortable, but I also don't think he is playing 100% right now. With so many transitions going on, and testing out the new players; it's tough to get into a rhythm. He will pick up right where he left off last season.

Our secondary has great chemistry and energy-- looking forward to seeing them be very physical this year!
