SCHWAB BOWL: Cleveland's McKeever has come a long way

From today's Portland Tribune:

• Gorman, son of former major-league pitcher Tom Gorman, stopped playing baseball two years ago to concentrate on football.

"I was a little grunt football player, and my passion was baseball growing up," he says.

He had knee surgery before his junior season at Canby and decided to steer away from baseball and basketball.

His father told him, "Whatever you want to do, pick it and play."

Gorman says he will play fullback at Portland State, even though the Vikings have loaded up with recruits at the position.

• Sheldon's Zach Todd will play slot receiver for Portland State, joining Sisters' Cory McCaffrey in converting from running back to play in PSU's run-and-shoot offense.

Todd will play running back on Saturday, capping off his prep career, which included the Irish's state title. He led Sheldon in rushing and receiving yards.

"I've been working on my hands and routes," he says, to ramp for PSU ball.

He and McCaffrey will room together at Portland State – "we've been texting each other once a week."

The 6-0, 190 Todd says he feels good about stepping in and competing for playing time, having gone through the playbook during his official visit to the Park Blocks and picking up the plays and routes.

"They were surprised," he says. "I shouldn't have much problem with it. It's just reading coverages; changing the route depending on coverage is the complicated part."

During the Les Schwab Bowl week, with practices at PSU, Todd ran into Viking coach Jerry Glanville "and gave him a hug," Todd says. "It was nice."
