Gage Gubrud and Troy Taylor

Given the tremendous amount of talent the Eagles have had at QB over the years, the results being put up by Gage are eye popping. For those with a high football IQ, am I correct in assuming this is mainly the impact of Coach Taylor? What is being done differently in the offense? Very impressed by what I see as a tremendous hire by Beau, and Coach Baldwin's evolution as HC in letting go of the offensive reins a bit.

I wouldn't say it's just Taylor. There are still a lot of Baldwin things being used, but I think the offense is in more of a hurry up style then it has in the last couple of years, also they are using a lot more screen/curl routs towards the center of the field. The one thing I think we are still missing is a better run game, but with our WR corp.....why bother running.
The biggest thing that has been a improvement/surprise is the OL in my opinion. Those guys have held up great with all the upperclassman leaving.

Does Taylor call the plays from the box? It sounds like Hill calling the plays last year didn't work well for Coach Baldwin. I know Coach Best handles all the on-field stuff along with the entire OL.

We have some different sets on offense which helps, we aren't predictable at all. Taylor has incorporated the fly sweep and its been great for us. We also have a home run threat in the back field which keeps the defense honest...at least to a point. The biggest thing we have is a mobile QB, who we can roll out with the option to run, or just call a QB run. Gubrud can get away from pressure, which is where we really struggled last year on Offense. Add all of this to the fact we have Shaq Hill back to give us another deep threat with speed that we didn't have last year and we have the best offense in the FCS. The Griz thought NAU and their Backup QB was tough, they have no idea what they are about to see this Saturday.

Do you think the Griz slept on NAU a bit though? I do.

I think the Griz will be far more amped up and focused for the game this Saturday. And as much as I would love to repay them by blowing the doors off on them, I think it will be a challenging game. I think we pull out the win, but it will be every bit the rivalry game it usually is.

That being said, I love Ebukam saying he is still pissed. That guy angry is going to wreck whoever he goes up against!

If Brady is on, he can be a very effective passer, and my understanding is that they will have their best receiving threat back from injury for this game.

Sorry for the thread drift...I do see several different wrinkles in the offense being brought by Taylor, and also agree that the mobile QB is probably the biggest difference maker. And I've been thinking about the need to have more balance between the run game and passing game. Maybe it's not as critical as I sometimes think. How often do people tell Cal Poly they need to throw more, and be more balanced? It's just not their style (not saying they aren't passing well. This year, their passing attack is way more effective because of their style, while that's not the case regarding our run game). It may be the combination of just enough rushing, a mobile QB, and the tricky way we get start players like Cooper, Shaq, etc into the run game may be just enough to keep the defenses we face honest.

I wouldn't gauge Montana by the NAU game. I think they're a lot better than that, although I think NAU has found a groove and are quite a bit better than when we beat them in Flagstaff. I think Montana will be the best team we've played since NDSU.

The outcome of this game will depend on the OL. If they can hold off the Montana front seven for the extra second or so for our vertical game. We will win big. I remember the old days against Idaho and we would play them real tough and they would just beat us deep 4 or five times. and that was the game. I see the same thing happening in this game. Montana will make a game of it but in the end they will lose to our vertical game. They are coming in to Ross field with the expectations of abusing our line and controlling the line of scrimmage, good luck with that. Just ask WSU, NAU, NDSU, NIU.

Painful to have you bring up the old Idaho games, Ron. We would stop their running game on first and second down, and then time after time on third and long they would burn us with the deep pass. Hopefully we won't see that against the Griz this Saturday.

Yeah, but the 1985 win in the playoffs against Idaho was still my favorite Eastern game of all time. I was pretty damn young, but I remember Jamie Townsend catching that pass and just busting loose.

+1 Yep. Believe the OL will play well now that they are back from injury and got a game under their belt and the running game with sweeps should slow down the upfield rush if we can stay out of 3rd and longs. Should be an exciting game.

The 1997 Idaho game may be my all time favorite against them. 2012 was pretty good too.

Taylor calls the plays from the sidelines.

It's an interesting dynamic that Best doesn't call the plays. I think our system works, having the QB coach sending in the plays while the OL coach runs the offense without manning play calling responsibilities.

Why is it when there is a running back behind the QB the hand off is so slow. It seems Gage delays the handoff at least one second before handing off or holding the ball. It is not like he is looking downfield deciding what to do just waiting for the RB to get to him. Is this a function of the RPO style Taylor and Baldwin are using now?
